Children Keep Active In Science - Reference and Education - Typepad

December 10th, 2012 by admin

At my high school reunion last week, I ran into an old friend. He and I had a biology class together when we were young. He told me that summer activities were a wonderful activity for youngsters, and that the best activities were science summer camps. He said that his children had attended some that were very enriching to their knowledge of science. He said that they were well worth the money that they cost, and they could meet others there.

Cousins leads Redskins over Browns 38-21

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Robert Griffin III watched as the Redskins' other rookie quarterback won again.

Rookie Kirk Cousins threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns filling in for an injured Griffin, leading Washington to its fifth straight win, 38-21 over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Cousins connected with Leonard Hankerson for both TDs in his first career start and the Redskins (8-6) barely missed a beat without the talented and multi-dimensional RG3, who sat out with a sprained knee.

Last week, Cousins came off the bench after Griffin got hurt and rallied the Redskins to an overtime win. Cousins was behind center from the start of this one and delivered a performance that extended Washington's longest winning streak since 2007 and moved the Redskins into a tie for first in the NFC East.

Rookie Trent Richardson had a pair of TD runs for the Browns (5-9).

Alfred Morris, a childhood rival of Richardson, had two touchdowns for the Redskins.

Wearing a burgundy warmup suit instead of his No. 10 jersey, Griffin, who sustained a mild sprain in the fourth quarter last week against Baltimore, cheered from the sideline as Cousins kept the Redskins (8-6) moving toward a possible spot in the playoffs.

Cousins may not have RG3's talent, but the fourth-round pick from Michigan State was efficient, accurate and only made one major mistake ? an early interception to set up Cleveland's first TD.

Cousins finished 26 of 37 as the Redskins improved to 5-0 since their bye. They'll end the season with games against NFC East rivals Philadelphia and Dallas, teams they beat in consecutive weeks to start their streak.

Griffin's playing status was in doubt all week before the Redskins surprisingly announced late Saturday night that Cousins would start. If the Browns thought they were getting a break, Cousins proved to be as challenging to stop as his more elusive and hyped teammate.

The Browns (5-9) had their winning streak stopped at three and faint playoff hopes snuffed out. Coach Pat Shurmur's fate may have rested on the Browns winning out, but that won't happen and his days in Cleveland could be dwindling quickly.

Rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden struggled from the outset. He went 21 of 35 for 244 yards and two picks, both leading to Washington touchdowns.

Cousins' second TD pass to Hankerson, a 2-yarder, gave the Redskins a 24-14 lead. As Cousins came to the sideline, Griffin gave him a fist bump and then sat on the bench with his backup, who for the past two weeks has shown he too can lead the Redskins to victory.

Washington went ahead 31-14 on Evan Royster's 4-yard run.

Weeden came back with a 69-yard scoring strike to speedy rookie Travis Benjamin to pull the Browns within 10, but Cousins calmly took the Redskins down the field again with Morris scoring from eight to make 38-21.

The Redskins needed this win, and Cousins made sure they got it.

He shook off the early pick and showed exceptional play faking ability. With Griffin out and inactive, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan had to alter his game plan and Cousins ran it with precision.

Linebacker Rob Jackson's interception of Weeden helped the Redskins take a 17-14 lead less than two minutes into the third quarter on Morris' 3-yard TD run.

Jackson picked off Weeden and returned it to the 15. Three plays later, Morris pulled in for his eighth rushing TD, tying the team rookie record set by Skip Hicks in 199

Richardson's second TD run gave the Browns a 14-10 lead with 1:11 left before halftime.

Cleveland's offense had been in a funk for most of the second quarter before Weeden completed five passes to get the Browns to Washington's 3. Richardson did the rest, busting over the left side for his 11th rushing TD. Earlier, he broke Hall of Famer Jim Brown's 55-year-old team rookie record for rushing TDs.

Kai Forbath's 44-yard field goal put the Redskins ahead 10-7. Forbath has started his career 15 of 15.

Cousins threw a 54-yard TD pass to Hankerson in the first quarter to tie it 7-7.

The Redskins gained just seven yards on their first four plays before Cousins, rolling right on the kind of play Shanahan has devised to maximize Griffin's wondrous skills, hooked up with Hankerson.

Browns safety T.J. Ward intercepted Cousins, on a ball tipped by cornerback Sheldon Brown, to set up Richardson's TD run in the first quarter. Ward returned the pick to Washington's 6-yard line, where he was tackled by Cousins, who showed good form in preventing an easy TD.

On the next play, Richardson took a handoff to the left side, was stopped at about the 2 and kept his legs and the pile moving into the end zone.

Crowds greet Hamas chief on 1st-ever Gaza visit

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) ? The exiled Hamas chief broke into tears Friday as he arrived in the Gaza Strip for his first-ever visit, a landmark trip reflecting his militant group's growing international acceptance and its defiance of Israel.

Khaled Mashaal, who left the West Bank as a child and now leads the Islamic group from Qatar, crossed the Egyptian border and once on Gazan soil, prostrated himself in a gesture of thanksgiving, recited a traditional Islamic prayer and kissed the ground.

He was greeted by a crowd of Hamas officials and representatives of Hamas' rival Fatah party.

Mashaal, 56, was also welcomed by a group of Palestinian children of Gaza militants killed by Israel in recent years, wearing military-style uniforms. Thousands of Hamas supporters lined the streets as Mashaal and Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh drove by, waving and flashing victory signs.

That the visit took place at all is a window on the changing climate of the Middle East and the balance of power among the factions and nations.

Hamas has received a boost from the rise of its parent movement, the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, following Arab Spring revolts ? especially in Egypt. Deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak barely tolerated Hamas, cooperating with Israel on a blockade of Gaza after Hamas overran it in 2007.

Israel, along with the U.S. and European Union, lists Hamas as a terror organization because of its history of attacks, including suicide bombings, against Israelis. Controlling most entrances to Gaza, Israel prevented most prominent diplomats from entering the territory after the violent Hamas takeover.

Egypt's new Brotherhood-dominated regime has welcomed Hamas leaders, negotiating a truce to end an eight-day flare-up between Hamas and Israel last month. Hamas trumpeted that as a victory, despite the new wave of death and destruction in the territory under its control in Israeli airstrikes, meant to stop daily Palestinian rocket attacks.

More significantly, in another precedent-setting series of events, the Egyptian prime minister and other foreign diplomats visited Gaza during the fighting, crossing in from Egypt, just as Mashaal did Friday.

"I have been dreaming of this historic moment my entire life, to come to Gaza," Mashaal told reporters as he stood alongside senior Hamas member Mousa Abu Marzouk and Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. "I ask God to give me martyrdom one day on this land."

Mashaal appeared before the charred car of Hamas militant chief Ahmad Jabari, assassinated by Israel at the beginning of last month's round of violence. The eight-day conflict was the bloodiest round of Israel-Gaza fighting in four years. Militants launched hundreds of rockets on Israel and Israeli warplanes targeted an equal number of Hamas targets.

Mahmoud Zahar, senior Hamas member, said Mashaal's first visit was in celebration of Hamas' gains in the latest round of fighting.

"He should return after a victory," Zahar said. "This return came after a victory."

Mashaal's visit, though widely cheered, is nevertheless sensitive because of Palestinian political infighting. Mashaal, considered more pragmatic than Hamas' Gaza-based hard-line leaders, forged a reconciliation agreement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who rules the West Bank. But the Gaza-based leadership, unsupportive of the agreement, has held up implementing it.

On Friday Mashaal asked aides to remove a red carpet laid out for him and refused an honor guard ceremony for his arrival. He appeared sensitive to the fact that Abbas still has not visited Gaza since Hamas wrested control of Gaza from his Fatah Party.

Palestinian officials in the West Bank expressed hope that Mashaal's visit would help finalize the Palestinian political unity deal.

Israel, which is reluctantly coming to terms with the shifting Palestinian power balance, mostly kept silent on the visit. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Israel did not differentiate among various Hamas leaders.

"Hamas is Hamas is Hamas," said the spokesman, Yigal Palmor.

Fifteen years ago, Mashaal was nearly assassinated in Jordan by Israeli agents who squirted a deadly poison in his ear, narrowly escaping after the U.S. forced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then serving his first term as premier, to provide the antidote.

Now a bolstered Mashaal appears in Gaza undeterred by neighboring Israel. Mashaal referred to the assassination attempt by "the foolish Netanyahu," saying, "God was stronger than him and his conspiracy."

Thousands of masked Hamas militants deployed throughout Gaza to protect Mashaal's convoy, with rocket propelled grenades, assault rifles and anti-aircraft weaponry in tow.

During Friday's visit, which was timed for the 25th anniversary of Hamas' founding, Mashaal also paid homage at the house of the group's spiritual leader Ahmed Yassin, who was paralyzed in a childhood accident and killed by a missile fired from an Israeli helicopter on March 22, 2004.

The assassination came at a time of heavy Israeli-Palestinian fighting that saw Hamas suicide bombers detonate their explosives inside buses, restaurants and other public places across Israel.

"The resistance was launched from this humble house, Yassin the giant of Jihad operated from here. We pledge to continue his path," Mashaal told reporters at Yassin's house, which has been turned into a museum of sorts. Yassin's sons and grandchildren greeted Mashaal, who stopped for a few moments by Yassin's broken wheelchair.

You Are The Most Important Person In YOUR World: 8 Ways To Practice Self-Care Over The Holidays

This holiday season, to ensure there is more love, connection and care in our lives, let's put our focus on developing a consistent practice of self-love and self-care instead!?

Below is a list of simple and practical ways that you can start practicing now, so you are full of the holiday cheer. If you make yourself the most important person in YOUR world, then you will most likely be able to make those you love the most important people in the world! ?
?
1. Affirmations and Mirror Work?

A great way to start practicing self-love and care is through positive affirmations and mirror work. Create 3 - 5 positive affirmations that make you smile and feel good when you think and say them. Then stand or sit in front of a mirror and say them out loud to yourself 10 times in the morning and 10 times at night. Some good ones to get you started are: I love myself just the way that I am, I am beautiful on the inside and out, I am worthy of greatness, I am worthy of love, I love you [insert your name], I really love you. ??

2. Nourish your cells, not just your taste buds?

Instead of eating food that just tastes good, try finding the right foods that make your body feel exceptional. A great way to do this is to check in with yourself during and after you eat, see how what you are eating is making you feel. Is your energy high or low? Is your stomach feeling good or a bit off??

A great place to start is to cut down on your sugar, wheat, or dairy intake. These things tend to do more for our taste buds and less for our cells and over all well-being. For more information on how to nourish your cells talk to my good friends at the Living Kitchen Wellness Group.?

New Drug Found Effective Against Prostate Cancer

"The effects of cabozantinib on bone scans are unprecedented in the treatment of prostate cancer," says David C. Smith, professor of internal medicine and urology at the University of Michigan Medical School, who led the study, the Journal of Clinical Oncology reports.

Cabozantinib is designed to target two important pathways linked to the growth and spread of prostate cancer. The drug had the most effect on tumors that had spread to the bone, which is the major site where prostate cancer spreads, according to a Michigan statement.

These tumors are typically very challenging to treat once they become resistant to hormone-based therapies. In addition to the improvements on bone scans, 67 percent of patients with bone ache reported an improvement in pain control and 56 percent cut down or eliminated painkillers after treatment with cabozantinib.

The trial had enrolled 171 men with castration-resistant prostate cancer, meaning their tumors no longer responded to hormone-based therapies.

Prostate cancer statistics: 241,740 Americans will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and 28,170 will die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

Video: NJ governor on Sandy: ?Losses are incalculable?

>> the governor of that state of new jersey . good morning to you.

>> good morning, matt.

>> you guys took a direct hit, and i know you'll probably not know the extent of the damage until daylight and you get to see the areas by ground and by air, but based on the reports you've been getting overnight, what's the state of your state ?

>> it's a major disaster , matt. we have over 2.4 million people without power across the state . we've had flooding in the raritan bay and newark area. the city of newark is 95% without power due to substation flooding. all that came from the tidal surge that came up from the storm through raritan bay and newark bay , the same thing you see affecting new york city , and we have a battered, battered new jersey shore that i hope to tour a little bit later on today, but i think the losses are going to be almost incalculable.

>> yeah. i was watching reports all afternoon and evening, governor, from long branch and point pleasant beach and atlantic city , and do you have a lot of people that you think you're going to have to go out and account for this morning, search-and-rescue missions to find people that you haven't heard from?

>> we are in the midst of search-and-rescue missions in atlantic city now, matt. we're in the midst of search-and-rescue missions in moonachie, new jersey, where there was significant flooding from, again, the tidal surge last night. that's up in bergen county . we've done a number of rescues already last night and through this morning. we have search and rescue teams positioned throughout the state . they are doing that right now. unfortunately, we've had three deaths so far in new jersey from the storm. we're hoping to make sure we don't add to that total.

>> you need help obviously. i know you spoke to president obama on a couple of occasions yesterday. he's offered his help. what's the federal government 's response been like so far?

>> federal government 's response has been great. i was on the phone at midnight again last night with the president personally. he has expedited the designation of new jersey as a major disaster area. i was on the phone with fema at 2:00 a.m . this morning to answer the questions they needed answers to get that designation, and the president has been outstanding in this, and so the folks of fema, craig fugate and his folks have been excellent

>> i know you took exception with the handling of this situation by the mayor of atlantic city , lorenzo langford. you were very upset that he didn't evacuate that city or all of that city and instead offered some people shelter in some city shelters, and you said that he was a rogue mayor and said, quote, i don't have a feud with the guy, but i wish he would do his job. a little time has passed between those comments and right now, the emotional level has come down. do you still feel that way?

>> listen, the fact of the matter is i feel badly for the folks in atlantic city who listened to him and sheltered in atlantic city , and i guess my -- my anger has turned to sympathy for those folks, and we're in the midst now of trying to go in and save them. daylight has come. we've got an urban search and rescue team with,000 both and 20 state police personnel. we have search and rescue teams down there as well. we're going to try to save the folks. i'm sorry that they received mixed messages. for some reason the mayor gave folks a mixed message. we need to get these people out and safe, and that's what we're going to do.

>> finally like so many other states, the state is dealing with a financial crisis . the budget is very tight. how much of the bill for the cleanup in your state is going to have to come out of state 's coffers? can you afford it?

>> well, listen, we have to afford, it mai. the fact of the matter is i think we'll get significant federal assistance on this and major disaster declaration last night by the president is incredibly helpful in that regard. we'll work with our federal partners on this. if i have to make cuts in the budget in other places to make sure we afford this i'll do it. too early to tell on that. i don't really know. i spoke to my budget folks yesterday, and they told me that that's not something they are concerned about at the moment. not something i'm concerned about at the moment. the first thing we've got to be concerned about is minimizing loss of life, saving people who need to be saved and then we'll move from there, and new jersey, listen, you know this, matt. new jersey is a tough place. we'll recover from this, and we'll be just fine and whatever we need to spend to get it done, we'll do what we need to do to make sure that gets done.

>> we're your neighbors in this, and our thoughts go out to the people of new jersey. governor, good luck to you.

>> thank you, matt.

Boduch's Blog: New Computer Users

I can't remember when, or why exactly, I started using a desktop computer. The fact that it was a clunky desktop system running Windows 93 says something all on its own. Clearly, I didn't have any idea how irrelevant that system would become in short order. New computer users don't understand how quickly technology development moves ? if I had known that, I probably wouldn't have bothered. The fact of the matter is that when I first started using a computer, I wasn't a developer, I wasn't using the thing as a tool to do any meaningful work. The real driving force was simple curiosity. That curiosity, I'm sure, was partly driven by the surrounding hype at the time. Computers, and their interconnected fabric were the future. If you didn't understand them and tightly integrate them into every aspect of your daily life, you'd left behind. Back then, I don't think the surrounding hype got the best of me. Hype hasn't slowed down, its simply moved on ? mobile computing for instance. I was too busy doing kid stuff to really appreciate the ramifications, and so I was considered a casual user. Probably like a lot of people around the globe who use computers, but don't depend on them for critical tasks. Then there are other types of users. There are developers, there are non-humans. We can classify users based on why they're currently using a computer, not why they first started.

When I first started using a computer, my perceived notions about the technology were hardware-centric. My interests were based on what I could see ? it's the machine itself that makes things happen. Which makes sense from an educational standpoint. As you're making your way through school, particularly at the younger end, physical objects are the best illustrators of concepts. This is a triangle, the same as the one you're seeing in the book. This is a toy firetruck, the same as the one driving by out on the street. It's much easier to grasp new concepts when they're presented visually, and in my case, the computer itself was responsible for ? whatever it was I thought computers did. From there, you start interacting with objects. It's one thing to see an object in the real world and draw an analogy to a concept formed in your mind. It's a more powerful thing to take a toy broom and start using it the same way the teacher does. The user interface on any computer system is the first thing any new computer user will manipulate if given the chance. This first interaction could make or break that person's lifelong relationship with computer technology. If you have a bad experience, like the first time you play a sport and end up injuring yourself ? you're impression of that experience taints any future variations of it. And so an interface that allows the user to perform actions on it is better than one with limited capabilities. But it goes further than that to include instruction. Whether the interface the first time user is being presented with has many actions, or is restrictive, they need to be discoverable. They need to lead to more inquiries from the user. Well, I can do that, can I do this? That doesn't work, did I do it wrong? Encouragement of deep probing can really suck people in. But not everyone.

If it were true that all was needed to create a successful user interface were instructional simplicity, there wouldn't be nearly as much software in existence as there is today. If you think about it, software, ultimately, is designed for some actor to solve a particular problem they're having. But, if first time users could all pick up how to perform queries, how to issue commands, and how to extend and improve the system at first glance, we wouldn't need all this specialized software that strives to make things easier for a particular class of user. From another point of view, new computer users are embryonic, and once they're exposed to their new computer environment, they develop new skills, attitudes, and ideas that fall outside the realm of computing. Computer use has a cumulative effect over time, and over this time, the knowledge you're building up helps determine your user class. After first starting with a computer, it doesn't take long to figure out that it was a loathsome experience or that it was an important tool and you cannot figure out how you lived without it. But form this point onward, you're no longer a new computer user, you're a software user.

Once you find yourself fitting into a general class of software user, you tend to evolve in a certain direction. Over time, you develop a personal taste for what makes a good application. The use cases you're playing into also determines the trajectory of your software choices. You make some bad calls, your direction changes slightly, toward a different set of software that does mostly the same thing, but maybe it does once small aspect of it better. Or maybe you've found some application that works exactly how you see fit. Maybe this confirms some doubts you've had as a user in your chosen problem domain and you've now further solidified the path you're on. What's interesting is how all this happens. There is such a diverse set of usage patterns out in the software ecosystem that it's very difficult to measure patterns. I'm not talking about the hoards of Mac and Windows users ? I'm talking about the complex configurations that seem to emerge from a new user of the software. Chances are, there is a nearly identical user, one how follows the same daily routine and who is trying to solve the exact same problems. But they accomplish their goals using an entirely different suite of software than someone who has set out to do the same thing. How can there possibly be so many ways to solve the same problem? Or perhaps its not as much about the finish line as it is about taste. If you think about using computers for entertainment value ? movies, games, and so on ? there is a completely different set of rationales. Here, as users, we're not thinking about how to stream content so that it has a minimal impact on others streaming the same content. That's a development perspective of someone working at the media company delivering the content. The user looking for entertainment value is looking at the content. But also the controls that allow them to manipulate the content ? changing the channel, setting preferences and bookmarks.

If I were to sit down with one of my friends and compare preferences for media on our computers, there are bound to be some similarities, but also some important contrasts. The funny thing is, I could probably track backward through time and see how our preferences diverged. It once again comes down to user class. Or in this case, each of our multiple user classes. I don't think each user around the globe can safely fit in one class of user anymore. I think most of us are wearing multiple hats. Especially if you're making a living working with computers professionally. Here, you're likely to have multiple classes applied to your user profile due to your separation of business life and personal entertainment. And, depending on what you do professionally, your profile may require more classes still to fully capture the complexity of your experience. All this leads me to believe that there is a feedback mechanism in play here. Developing a class definition for a user and applying it to someone isn't as clear cut as saying that they've used this particular type of software for so long and therefore fall under this tree. I think it's a combination of choices they've made early on as a user, what led them to make those choices, and once they've established themselves with a base user class, the process repeats itself. Only as life with computers goes one, the less significant your decisions become. At this point, the choices the user makes are an exercise in fine-tuning.

Early in a person's life with computers, they're exposed to the notion of free software, or, open source software. It isn't likely that they'll make the distinction between free and open source just yet, but that's not important. What matters is that fact that some users make the mental leap to understand that there is software available for use, free of charge, that can likely solve any of your problems. Of course, every individual use case is unique and it isn't fair to say that paying for software is never the better option ? because a lot of the time it is. What is essential, is that users understand the distinction early on in life. It's important to understand where open source is the better choice and how to go about using it. It'll set the cost expectations not only for yourself, but for newer generations that you help along the way. Given that many open source projects are fairly mainstream ? you can use Linux for 100% entertainment value ? it's more accessible these days. And if it's more accessible, the more likely users of open source technology are likely to understand the motivations of the developers that created it. And that's a valuable lesson to someone new with software.

So if understanding the full spectrum of software ? both paid proprietary and free open source ? is there a bad thing that we should avoid in early computer usage? The only thing I can think of is never take anything as a given. Especially if you're teaching kids to use computers. I think once you've established a trustful attitude toward software you've never used before, you set the bar low in terms of what you can get out of the software. Learn how to poke holes in the walls and see if the code starts pouring out. I think having this ability will help you detach software quality from branding and ultimately lead more informed life with computers.

Slay dragons in college? Students play 'Skyrim' for class

4 hrs.

If you love playing the epic fantasy-themed game?"The Elder Scrolls V:?Skyrim" then?right now would be a great time to be a student at Rice University in Texas.

After all, if you take the English course being taught by instructor Donna Beth Ellard, then you'd be playing the enormously popular role-playing?video?game for homework ... not to mention?for credit.

Ellard is?an instructor in the private university's English Department. She specializes in medieval literature, and starting next spring?she'll be teaching a class she's created?called?"Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim."

Up to 19 lucky students will have a chance to partake in this junior-level class which will have them reading?selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas while they play different quests within the game.

Though Ellard told me this is the first time she's used a video game in a class, she is part of a growing number of college instructors who are incorporating games into university-level?course work. For example, at Wabash College in Indiana, "Portal" was made required "reading" for all students. Meanwhile,?World of Warcraft has been?used at Mercyhurst College in?Pennsylvania?as part of the?intelligence studies program.?And at the University of Texas at Brownsville, one instructor has?used PlayStation 3?video games to teach physics.

I had a chance to talk to chat with Ellard???who, perhaps?surprisingly,?does not consider herself an avid gamer ??about the class, what she hopes playing "Skyrim" will teach her students and?why fantasy is so important to our modern?lives.?Read on?...

Q.?Can?you tell me a bit about yourself?

Ellard:?I?m an Anglo-Saxonist, which means that my research deals primarily with literature that spans from about 700 to 1150 (although those dates are very flexible). This literature is written in Old English and Latin.

Although my research field is the early medieval period, I am deeply committed to thinking about its connection to later periods. To these ends, part of my work focuses on the role that Scandinavian literature played in the development of my field, Anglo-Saxon Studies, during the late-18th and early-19th centuries.?

This period???from the French Revolution to the end of the Napoleonic Wars???was a time when England was at constant war with France, a time when it was busy expanding its colonial territories, and a time when its antiquarians and historians were engaged in writing Anglo-Saxon history.?

Where does Scandinavia fit in to all of this? During the late-18th century, very few Old English texts were known or readily available, while Scandinavian poetry had been circulating popularly in England since the mid-18th century. Aided by the dim understanding that Anglo-Saxon England was populated by tribes from northern Europe (including Scandinavia), Scandinavian literature and history became a critical source for early Anglo-Saxon Studies.

In other words, Anglo-Saxon Studies developed during a period of war in which England was struggling to define itself as a nation and as an empire. And Scandinavia came to function as a ?fantasy? culture that was folded into Anglo-Saxon history. Its pagan warriors from which Anglo-Saxons descend and against which they fought (read: the Vikings) became figures that allowed the English to address modern questions of nation and empire.

Q.?How do video games fit into your life? Are you an avid gamer?

Ellard:?I am not an avid gamer. I had heard of the Elder Scrolls series, but it?wasn't?until I saw someone playing "Skyrim" last year that I became really taken by the game. I started playing it myself not only because I found it beautiful but also because its investments in a fantasy world of dragons, draugrs, trolls, and magic (concepts that are not exclusive to but relate extensively with the sagas) are coupled with a politics of national identity and Empire that resonate intimately with those of late-18th and early-19th century England.

Q.?How?did you come?up with the idea to use "Skyrim" in the classroom? What inspired you?

Ellard:?I had wanted to teach a class on fantasy for both theoretical and historicist reasons. For one, fantasy is probably one of the most important components of our daily psychic lives (how many times do we catch ourselves daydreaming?). Likewise, I believe that it?s critical for undergraduates to understand the high level of interactivity between medieval and contemporary literature and culture.

Because my field (English) organizes literature according to historical period, undergraduates can be led to believe that their survey of 18th-century literature doesn?t have anything to do with, say their survey of 20th-century literature. And in this paradigm, you can imagine how remote and unrelated medieval literature could seem to those of later periods. A course about fantasy seemed like an effective way to bridge medieval and modern literatures and cultures.?

I?didn't?have to choose "Skyrim" for the class. I could have paired Scandinavian sagas with modern fantasy fiction (e.g. Tolkien) or with contemporary film (e.g. "13th Warrior"); however, "Skyrim" seemed like the most logical choice. Not only would it allow us as a class to think about the immediate cultural and political implications (both national and imperial) of why this particular game is so incredibly popular but it would also enable us to have conversations about the critical role that video games (unlike other media) play in reshaping medieval fantasy.?

Q.?What do you hope your students will ultimately take away from this class?

Ellard:?I hope that they leave with a basic understanding of how fantasy works as a psychological concept. I hope that they are introduced to medieval Scandinavian literature and its relevance to modern culture. And I hope that they learn about the politics that percolate below the surface of our Scandinavian fantasies.

Q.?Do you expect all of your students will be gamers? Or do expect to have some non-gamers join?

Ellard:?I really don?t have any idea. The students I know who plan to take it in the spring are interested in medieval literature, but I can see that it would appeal to gamers as well. I might limit it to folks who have some experience playing the game, but I?m not sure.

Q.?Can you give me an example of what a homework assignment will look like?

Ellard:?I?m still working out the class, so I don?t know yet. As the primary materials are Norse and Icelandic sagas and theoretical readings on fantasy, most homework will be text-based. For me this is a very experimental class, so I don?t know to what extent 'Skyrim' will be a participant in regular assignments. I have thought about structuring reading units around different quests, but I?m not sure.

Q.?You said this is the first time you've used a video game in the classroom???does that present any unique challenges for you as the instructor?

Ellard:?Anytime you teach a new class the learning curve is pretty steep, but I don?t have a pedagogical model for discussing a video game in a classroom especially in relation to textual materials. It?s not like a film clip, which can be viewed in class and then discussed.

Video games are interactive, personal experiences. You?re a player only when you operate the controller, and in 'Skyrim' the quests you experience in the game are contingent upon the choices you make.

Q.?I have noticed video games appearing more and more as part of college-level course work. Do you have any thoughts about why games can be a successful teaching tool?

Ellard:?Personally, I don?t see "Skyrim" or any other game as a teaching tool. I see it as a ?text? just like film and television are texts, just like visual and performing arts are texts. Each engages with and refracts contemporary culture.

As a medievalist, I?m not interested in advocating video games in the classroom; however, these games are as integral to popular culture as other "more respectable? art forms and should be acknowledged as such.

One might pause for a minute and recognize that it wasn?t so long ago that film wasn?t considered worthy of study, and film studies departments are now part of most university arts and sciences programs. The same thing could be said for studying fantasy and science fiction in English departments. Twenty-five years ago undergraduates weren?t reading Tolkien in university, and now no one thinks twice about it.?

Q.?Is there anything else?you'd like people to know about the course you're teaching and why you decided to use "Skyrim"?

Ellard:?I?d just like to press?upon the point?that this is not a class about playing video games. It?s not even a class about "Skyrim." It?s about medieval fantasy and about acknowledging the very important role that it plays in the recreational pursuits and the serious politics of contemporary culture.

To dismiss fantasy and to ignore the impact of the Middle Ages on modern psychic life is to remain unaware of how and why we structure some of our most basic belief systems.

Bravery | Crazy.Beautiful.Life

Oct 24, 2012 by Stephanie

Human beings are ambitious. We spend so much time wanting, pursuing, wishing. For the most part, that?s okay. Ambition is good. Chasing things with integrity is good. Dreaming. As long as the chase doesn?t diminish what we already have. The goodness we take for granted. The people we take for granted. The lives we take for granted. My life is good. ?- Haley James Scott (One Tree Hill)?

I got in a fight with a friend yesterday which pretty much ended the friendship. ?I suppose that I should feel a little more upset about the whole ordeal than I actually do, but really, my emotions are pretty leveled. ?(Which I have to say, is a pretty epic accomplishment for me.)

The situation went down like this: ?For about a year now, this friend has been coming up with these outlandish plans to escape the area. First, she was moving to Hawaii and saying how I should come with her, then it was California, then Florida, then some other guy was coming here to live with her, and now apparently she?s moving overseas to be with him. ?Throughout all of this, I?ve been largely ignoring her plans because they never actually happen (it?s like the boy who cried wolf ? moving edition) and because they never directly affected me. ?This time they did, and this time I snapped.

It?s not like I wasn?t thinking these things every other time she came up with a new plan, it?s just, who am I to judge her on her dreams? ?Well apparently when you finally do speak your mind on things, friends get mad. ?This is particularly frustrating to me, because this is the same girl who talks often about the fact that we give each other tough love. ?Well, it?s more like, she gave me tough love on various things which I actually needed to hear ? and I respected her for? but when I finally did give her tough love, she flipped out and wrote some passive aggressive bullshit about me on facebook. ?(Apparently, because she didn?t use names, it doesn?t count so I?m not going to use her name once on this blog post and we?ll see if she cares.)

One of the best things she said about me in retaliation though, was about my apparent unhappiness with my life and how apparently I?m going to be lonely forever (implied). ?So, I?m talking to my mom and relaying the conversations to her my mom comments:

?You know, I thought when you and Eurymakos broke up, you?d go crazy and be unhappy too ? and I don?t see that, but maybe that?s because you?re better at hiding it.?

The truth of the matter is, I?m not unhappy. ?I have some amazing friends, I have a good job, I have my blog, my book, and my time to do things I want to do.

That?s not to say there aren?t times when I?m frustrated with Eurymakos. ?It doesn?t mean there aren?t times when I get depressed about my parents moving to Florida. ?Sometimes my job makes me want to just break down in tears at the pressure. ?But that?s the funny part about my relationship / friendship / whatever you want to call it with Eurymakos ? it has given me the kind of inner peace in my life that I have always searched for but rarely found. ?I spent the first three months of our relationship running away from it because I was scared, but in the past three months, I have found this. ?I know that the rest of the world could be crumbling beneath me and everything would be okay as long as he was standing next to me. ?I mean, we aren?t dating, but just knowing he?s a text message, a phone call, an IM away gives me a kind of quiet strength that I didn?t know I had. ?Knowing that he?s in my life, and there for me makes me stronger, and happier and I think that when it comes down to it ? that?s the true meaning of love. ?It?s what your best friendships, your relationships, your family should feel like.

You know, I started this post with a One Tree Hill quote because it kinda fit to the situation with my friend. ?I?m going to end it with another one, because it fits with my situation with Eurymakos.

?It has been said that there?s one word that will free us from the weight and the pain of life, and that word is love. ?I believe that. ?That doesn?t mean that it hasn?t been hard, or that it won?t be. ?It just means that, I found a stillness and bravery in myself with you. You make me brave.?

And that is worth fighting for, and as long as I have him in my life, I will never be lonely, or truly unhappy.

Tigers' Leyland looks for championship encore

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland has been around long enough to know what he likes about baseball and what he can do without.

Daily meetings with the media are not on the top of the 67-year-old's fun things to do list.

"The hardest part is probably dealing with the media, and I don't mean that disrespectful," he told reporters before the Tigers faced the San Francisco Giants in the World Series opener on Wednesday.

"It takes a lot of time. You're answering a lot of questions. You're questioned a lot, you're second?guessed a lot. The fun part is normally the game."

As the Tigers prepared to take the field for batting practice, Leyland once again settled into the hot seat fielding questions from the media about his perspective on the designated hitter having managed in both leagues.

He skippered the Florida Marlins to a World Series crown in 1997 and is back in the Fall Classic for the second time leading the American League champion Tigers.

"A lot of people have always talked about it's much more difficult to manage in the National League," he said. "I don't agree with that totally because I think in the American League you have to decide exactly when your pitcher is done.

"A lot of times in the National League your decision is made for you because if you get behind in a game, you've got to pinch?hit.

"It's different."

The three-time Manager of the Year said winning the title once merely whetted his appetite for an encore.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who won the title two years ago when San Francisco ousted the Texas Rangers in five games, knows the feeling, assured Leyland.

"Because you're fortunate to be on a team that won one, that's why you want another one," said Leyland, who has been in Detroit since 2006. "You realize how good the feeling is and obviously that's why you'd like to have another one.

"Being part of another world championship would be quite a treat obviously but there's a lot of games to be played before that happens and I don't feel any different than Bruce Bochy does."

Leyland has been managing in the majors since 1986 but said he has seen nothing like the elaborate choreographed handshake between Tigers sluggers Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera.

"To be honest with you, I don't pay much attention to that stuff," he said. "They say I'm old school. I'm really not. I'm old, but I'm not necessarily old school.

"But I don't really get into that, whether it's our team or the other team. I kind of don't really look, to be honest with you. But it's kind of a new wave of baseball and entertaining to some people. It is what it is."

Expiring Bush Tax Cuts Include Mortgage Debt Relief

Tuesday, October 23

?Regardless of which box you are checking in the upcoming election, you should be aware that the expiring Bush tax cuts, made famous by the recent presidential debates, include a provision that excludes mortgage debt relief from taxation up to a maximum of $2 million. ?If the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire, the Mortgage Debt Relief Act will expire with them. ?This means that homeowners who have received reductions in their mortgage debt either via short sales or loan modifications will be required to pay income tax on the amount of principal that was forgiven. ?According to a recent article in The Chicago Tribune, this would amount to around $19,000 in taxes owed for the average middle class relief settlement.

There appears to be bi-partisan support in both houses for extending the mortgage debt relief portion of the Bush tax cuts for another several years, but without extending the rest of the cuts it seems unlikely that a bill supporting the extension of just the mortgage debt relief portion will even reach a vote prior to the November elections. ?

This is especially bad timing when you consider that the nation?s five largest banks (Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co., Citigroup Inc. and Ally Financial Inc.) have recently increased their offerings of principal reductions and other relief to homeowners as part of a $25 billion settlement with federal and state officials over foreclosure abuse allegations. ?If the Bush tax cuts, including the mortgage debt relief act, do expire then these principal reductions will be reported to the IRS and will appear on homeowners? tax returns as income.

Experts agree that while the housing market shows signs of stabilization, extending these tax cuts is vitally important to keeping the housing recovery on track. ?"Extending this tax relief is critically important," said Lynda Gledhill, a spokeswoman for California Attorney General Kamala Harris. Harris was a key player in the national mortgage settlement. ?"It is difficult to imagine strapped homeowners able to take advantage of these and other market-restoring programs if they have to pay federal income tax on the principal reduction or short sale as 'income,'" Gledhill said.

My personal opinion is that we will probably see Congress find a way to extend these tax cuts for another 6 months to a year, much as they extended the first time home buyer credit in 2010-2011. ?Regardless, one thing is certain. ?If you are even remotely considering selling your home via a short sale, now is the time to do it. ?If you are able to close before the end of the year, you know that you will be able to take advantage of the tax credit.
