This is a good trend to see and one that hopefully will continue. Delinquent mortgages are the precursor to foreclosures and foreclosures have been pounding home prices. So goes the delinquent mortgages,so go the foreclosures and so goes their negative impact on home prices. We have a long way to go but at least things are moving the right direction.

Chevron accused of 'environmental crime' in Brazil

Federal prosecutors in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday accused US oil giant Chevron and 17 executives of "environmental crime" in connection with a major spill off southeastern Brazil last November.

The country's national oil regulator estimates that 2,400 barrels of crude were spilled in the accident, which led authorities to suspend all of Chevron's drilling operations and to deny the company access to huge new offshore fields.

The US firm rejected Wednesday's charges as "outrageous and without merit" and vowed to defend itself and its employees.

The prosecutors said in a statement that it was charging "Chevron, oil drilling contractor Transocean and 17 executives with environmental crime and damage in connection with the oil spill."

George Buck, the president of Chevron's Brazil unit, and three other company officials "sought to frustrate the work of the prosecution by presenting a misleading emergency plan," and by "altering documents shown to the authorities," it is alleged.

Prosecutors called for a "freeze on all assets of the accused, including 11 senior officials and employees from Chevron and five from Transocean," and an environmental expert. A judge will decide if the executives are to face trial.

"The charges are based on conclusions of the police investigation into the November 7 2011 accident which occurred because the accused did not respect safety procedures," state prosecutor Eduardo Santos de Oliveira told reporters.

The oil spill "affected the entire maritime ecosystem, which could lead to the extinction of species, as well as the region's economic activities, in addition to damage caused to the state," he added.

The prosecutors called for payment of bail of $550,000 for each person accused and $5.5 million for each company.

"These measures aim to ensure that the accused, most of them foreigners, do not leave the country. The sum for the fines will not be returned and will be used to pay for the damage caused," said de Oliveira.

The prosecutor said the sentences sought "include up to 31 years and 10 months" for five of the 17 accused, including Buck.

"These charges are outrageous and without merit," Chevron said in a rebuttal.

"Once all the facts are fully examined, they will demonstrate that Chevron and its employees responded appropriately and responsibly to the incident. Chevron will vigorously defend the company and its employees."

Chevron said it has collaborated "transparently and completely with all the appropriate Brazilian government authorities."

It provided "relevant information" and "timely transportation to the incident site for several National Petroleum Agency officials, federal police officers and other authorities."

"There is no technical or factual evidence demonstrating any willful or negligent conduct by Chevron or its employees associated with the incident," the US firm added.

Earlier Wednesday, Carlos Minc, the environment secretary, accused Chevron of "unprofessional conduct" and said he favored barring the oil company from operating in Brazil until it pays for recent spills at the Frade field it operates off the Rio de Janeiro coast, including a minor one earlier this month.

He said there would be "no impunity" for foreign oil companies operating in Brazil and "we must set an example with Chevron."

"If (foreign) firms have the best technology, take all the precautions, they will be welcome, if not they won't be," he told reporters.

To date, the US oil giant has not paid "a single cent" for two fines totaling $54 million imposed after the November spill, Minc said, announcing new measures requiring companies to disclose the main conclusions of their geological studies.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, meanwhile, stressed the "importance of oil" for this booming South American country, which is already the world's sixth largest economy.

"Companies which will come to operate and those already here must know, without exception, that existing safety procedures are meant to be respected," she warned in Rio during the inauguration of the new head of the National Petroleum Agency.

As violence reigns, some flee north Nigeria

NNEWI, Nigeria (AP) ? A town hall meeting called by Christians to discuss funeral arrangements turned into a bloodbath in northern Nigeria when members of a radical Islamist sect opened fire with assault rifles.

At least 20 members of the Igbo ethnic group died in that attack Jan. 6. More attacks have followed, targeting the largest Christian group living across Nigeria's Muslim north.

Many Igbos are now fleeing the north, even as state officials and others downplay the exodus, likely out of fear of sparking retaliatory violence.

The Igbo are one of the three dominant ethnic groups in Nigeria. Based in Nigeria's eastern states, the Igbo became largely Catholic after being colonized by the British. Many became successful traders who spread throughout Nigeria. In the country's Muslim north, Igbo traders often dominate car parts sales and other markets.

That often leaves Igbo traders the most exposed during ethnic and religious violence that has routinely gripped Nigeria since independence from Britain in 1960.

"We're everywhere there's a clash between any two groups of people because we're a people who live all over the place," said Maja Emeka Umeh, the spokesman of Anambra state in Nigeria's east. "They end up killing our people."

A failed 1966 coup, led primarily by Igbo army officers, sparked violence targeting Igbo people throughout Nigeria's Muslim north. About 10,000 people died in the resulting riots and many fled back to eastern Nigeria ahead of secessionist leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu declaring the region and much of Nigeria's oil-producing southern delta its own nation.

Most recently, the Igbo have been targeted by the Boko Haram Islamist sect, which has killed more than 360 people this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. In a message to journalists at the start of the year, the sect threatened to begin killing Christians living in the nation's north.

The attacks came soon after. People have been fleeing, with many taking buses to other parts of Nigeria. In Nnewi, a city in the south, attendance for Masses at St. Michael De Archangel noticeably rose from those who had returned, the Rev. Michael Onyekachukwu said.

The total number of displaced people is difficult to come by. While Nigerian Red Cross officials acknowledge Igbos fled the north, they declined to offer specific figures. Government officials also downplayed the number of those fleeing, saying many had returned to the north.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, has decried the killings by Boko Haram.

"Some continue to dip their hands and eat with you and you won't even know the person who will point a gun at you or plant a bomb behind your house," Jonathan said Jan. 8 at a church service in the capital, Abuja.

There's another fear at play ? the specter of retaliatory violence targeting Muslims living in the south. In February 2006, Christians in Onitsha burned the bodies of slain Muslims and defaced mosques following protests over the publication of cartoons portraying the Prophet Muhammad. A local human rights activist estimated at the time that at least 80 Muslims had been killed in Onitsha.

Umeh, the spokesman of Anambra state, said government officials would try to put down any unrest. But he made a point to mention the 1994 death of Gideon Akaluka, an Igbo man arrested over allegedly defacing the Quran in Nigeria's northern city of Kano. Rioters broke into jail, beheaded him and carried his head around the city on a spike.

"Nigerians, the federal government, the state government, other authorities, they looked the other way," Umeh said.

Donald Trump on Rosie O'Donnell Sucking: I Called It!

Donald Trump is not surprised, or sad, to say the least, about Rosie O'Donnell's recent misfortunes. He says he's known what a failure she is since the get-go.

If you missed it, Oprah cancelled Rosie's show last week - amid reports of chaos on what staffers called "hellish" set - to her former adversary's delight.

Trump went on Twitter this morning and wrote, "Rosie O'Donnell has failed again. Her ratings were abysmal and Oprah cancelled her on Friday night."

"When will media executives learn that Rosie just hasn't got it."

Trumped UpRosie Image

Trump has been bashing Rosie for years, claiming the former co-host on The View was a "pig" and a "loser" after she called him a "snake-oil salesman."

In the case of OWN canning her, Rosie felt the writers, producers, stage managers and directors were all inept ... and that didn't sit well with the brass.

The brass being Oprah, who hired all those people.

Her attitude was the final straw. One word several high level staffers used to describe R.O. is "bully," something the network ultimately had enough of.

Burning question: What's more offensive: Donald Trump Jr.'s hunting photos, or that gargoyle Rosie O'Donnell's mere presence in any situation?
