3M launches its Cloud Library e-book lending service, hardware and apps in tow

3M launches its Cloud Library e-book lending service, hardware and apps in tow

Almost a year after it was first announced 3M's Cloud Library e-book lending service is getting a proper rollout. Introduced today at a beta site in St. Paul, the system is now ready for its kiosks, e-readers and apps to hit the hands and eyes of library patrons. The touch-based Discovery Terminals allow catalog browsing for visitors and selections can be checked out -- along with 3M's eReaders -- like other library materials. Already have a mobile device? E-books will play nicely with your iPad, Nook or Android device via the Cloud Library app. If you find yourself needing to read a bit on your computer, checked out items are compatible with both PCs and Macs as well. "With this technology, we are able to offer cutting-edge technology to all our patrons, whether they own their own e-reader or not," said Kit Hadley, director of the Saint Paul Public Library. A handful of other library systems across the US have also implemented the service. The list of those sites and all details on the introductory period await your click in the PR below.

James Franco recently made headlines when he posted a video of himself singing Rihanna's Dr. Luke joint "You Da One" on the Internet. The clip was short, sweet and a bit out of nowhere.

But if you think that Franco was in one of his performance-art moments when he created the viral video, think again. It turns out he's just a fan of the colorful singer. "[It] didn't take a lot of work [to lip-synch to her song]," he confessed to MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday. "But I do like Rihanna."

In fact, his biggest confession about his connection to the singer came next. It seems the two were thisclose to working together on her 2011 "We Found Love" video. As the story goes, before male model Dudley O'Shaughnessy landed the role as Ri's troubled leading man, Franco had the opportunity to be cast as one-half of that rocky romance.

"She actually asked me to be in that video, the one with the relationship that gets crazy," he dished. "I couldn't do it. But, I guess, I hope that that means there's mutual love between us."

Well, apparently these two are getting a second chance to work together, and this time it's on the big screen. Franco teased that Rihanna may appear in pal Seth Rogen's flick "The Apocalypse," which follows a slew of celebs playing themselves. They're partying at Franco's house when they learn the apocalypse is coming.

"I think she's gonna be in the new movie that I'm doing, Seth Rogen's directorial debut," he shared. "I think she has a little part in that."

Square Now Processing $5B In Payments Per Year; Volume Up 25 Percent Since March

square1Payments platform Square has released a number of new stats today, as well as good news for merchants using its mobile payments app to accept credit cards. According to a Bloomberg report, Square is now processing $5 billion in annual payments (or around $416 million in payments per month), which is up from $4 billion in annual payments in March. And payment volume is up 25 percent over the past month. Square also says that it will be making funds available in merchants' bank accounts the next business morning (for any sales made before 5 pm), while other merchant processors can take 2 to 5 business days to get merchants their money. This is a big win for merchants, who now have access to their sales revenue immediately.
