No doubt, telephone is one of the most important means of communication though there have been other breakthrough in technology over the past few years. As we all know, telephone was one of the earliest inventions in technology and brought people closer at a time when the medium of communication was limited. And over the past few decades, telephone has gone through n number of changes both structure wise and use wise. These days, the phones are so attractively designed that man has accepted it as his best companion. No one can deny the fact that people are so crazy about the telephones. While the wired telephones were so popular until a few years back, the wireless phones have replaced them due to the kind of convenience they offer. We all know that telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in the 18th century. According to Greeks, ?tele? means far and ?phone? means sound.
Let us now take a brief look at the history of telephone.
Though Alexander Graham Bell was the one who invented the telephone, it is said that he himself derived the ideas from the experimental results of various other scientists. For instance, Johann Philipp Reis first discovered the fact that sound can be transmitted through electricity in the form of waves. He built something named as Reis Telephone which was designed based on the very same concept. However, the project was not completely successful as it has several drawbacks. Later, another scientist, Antonio Meucci, made his own demonstration of the telephone in Havana. As a matter of fact, he is considered as an influential figure in the invention of telephone.Alexander Graham Bell, basically a professor took pride in teaching signals and instructions to the deaf and dumb about the intricacies of sound waves and its characteristics.
Bell was keen on developing a modified form of telegraph that was capable of generating multiple signals in the form of messages at the same time. When he was carrying out his experiment, the technique of transmitting sound through electricity struck his mind. In the mid 1870?s, in one of his experiments Bell detected the transmission of sound of a clock through wires. This was s shot in the arms for Bell. Later on, he along with one of his talented assistants, Thomas A. Watson strived hard on developing an apparatus that transmitted sound. In 1876, Bell uttered the first few words through the apparatus that said ?"Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you" and he also got an answer from the other end. These words, can never be forgotten until telephone exists in this world.Graham Bell vs. Elisha Gray
Elisha Gray was another great scientist who worked with Bell on inventing the telephone. Though it is accepted worldwide that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, still there are people who say Elisha Gray has to be credited for the same. The records during their time mention that there was only a matter of few hours? difference between the times both these genius?s applied for a patent for telephone. However, as Bell was the first to file the patent, he is regarded as the father of telephone by the world. He received various awards for his miraculous achievement. . Some other noteworthy inventions associated with the telephone are:
Rotatory dial invented in 1923
Cordless phone invented in 1965
and Mobile phone invented in 1983.
From the time the telephone was invented in 1876, thousands of people owned the phone within a year of its discovery. And today, with the rapid fast development in technology, phone has undergone massive changes in its look and usage. Hail the great man, Alexander Graham Bell and enjoy talking endlessly on the phone with your loved ones.
