Travel Insurance Before a Long Vacation is Important

Travel Insurance Before a Long Vacation is Important

Insurance, as we all know, is a form of risk management basically used to hedge an uncertain loss.?We all are very much familiar about life insurance, car insurance, and medical insurance?but raise our eyebrows while selecting travel insurance when booking air tickets and vacation packages.

In today?s time, when travel has become an auxiliary sector for business and leisure industry, travel insurance has come into scene to help the policy holders travel without worrying about adversities that can occur while travelling within their own country or in a foreign land.

Why Should We Buy Travel Insurance?

Life is very uncertain and future can never be predicted. Therefore, we should hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.

Even the well-planned travel trips can be impacted by unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergency, natural calamity, flight delay?or cancellation, baggage lost, and so on.?Troubles can occur anytime, anywhere while traveling?or before starting your trip and may force?you to cancel, postpone or pre-pone your trip and incur?unplanned expenses.?Any such mishap can turn a relaxing vacation into a backbreaking as well as bank-breaking experience. But?by?opting for a?travel insurance policy, you can safeguard your journey?and save your money even in adverse conditions.

There are number of travel insurance?choices?as per the types of travelers and trips.

Types of Travel Insurance per Travelers

  • Family Travel Insurance
  • Group Travel?Insurance
  • Senior Citizen?Travel Insurance
  • Student Travel?Insurance
  • Expatriates

Types of Travel Insurances as per Trips

  • Flight Insurance
  • Business Trip Insurance
  • Backpacking Trip Insurance
  • Adventure Trip Insurance
  • Last-minute Travel Insurance

Other Travel Insurance plans:

  • Lost Baggage Insurance

Best Travel Insurance Plan: Package Travel Insurance /All-inclusive Travel Insurance Plan

As?compared?to a travel medical or?lost baggage?travel insurance?plan, which covers only a certain set of travel risks,?an all-inclusive travel insurance package plan is far better.? It is indeed the famous travel insurance and is commonly purchased because of the comprehensive travel protections it offers.

Benefits for Purchasing an All-Inclusive Travel Insurance Plan:

Easy-to-understand and combines?much coverage?into a single plan:?Travel insurance companies?offer acomprehensive set of coverages for each?all-inclusive travel?plan?for targeted traveler type. For example, an all-inclusive air travel insurance plan would include flight cancellation, delay, lost baggage, terrorism attacks etc.

  • Extra?expenses incurred for?unexpected airfare, lodging, and transportation due to trip cancellations?or travel delays

PFT: Ex-BU hoopster charged with extorting RGIII

Greg Schiano, Mark Dominik, Eric LeGrandAP

The Bills announced that individual game tickets will be available online on July 9.

Miami needs to take things slowly with the development of QB Ryan Tannehill.

If there?s a spot for a fullback on the Patriots? roster, Spencer Larsen appears to have the inside track.

Said Jets QB Tim Tebow of getting cheers from kids at a football camp, ?It?s very humbling. I just take my role and my platform as a professional athlete very seriously.?

The Ravens are promoting a soccer game at their home stadium.

Former Bengals DE Pollack has become a college football announcer even though, he says, as a player, ?I didn?t care for broadcasters, to be honest. When you?re playing, it?s almost like you?re vs. the media. Coaches always say you should just give vanilla answers.?

The Browns will have an Ohio University Day this season. (And unlike the Dolphins? University of Florida Day last season, they?re not doing it to cash in on the popularity of an opposing player.)

The Steelers expect more than 100,000 fans to attend this year?s training camp.

Texans backup QB Case Keenum thinks questions about his height are silly.

Colts DT Josh Chapman says his recovery from knee surgery is right on schedule.

Jaguars players, coaches and staff members have volunteered to build a house for a Jacksonville family.

Says Titans TE Jared Cook of teammate Craig Stevens, ?Craig?s a beast of a blocker. He?s good at keeping his balance and staying low, and he has good leg drive and upper-body strength to finish a guy. He?s really good at finishing a play and staying on his feet, so that?s what I?ve learned from him.?

The Broncos? website offers some facts and figures about the season opener.

Former Chiefs S Jon McGraw still hasn?t caught on with another team in free agency.

The Raiders hope a change in the team?s culture can result in a better defense.

The Chargers hope they have more speed on offense.

Cowboys G David Arkin says he wasn?t strong enough last season, and he?s getting in the weight room to change that.

Asked about Giants owner John Mara talking about eliminating kickoffs, Giants K Lawrence Tynes said, ?Well, obviously, I don?t like it. But I don?t think it?ll ever happen.?

Here?s the Eagles? full training camp schedule.

The man arrested for extorting Redskins QB Robert Griffin III once appeared on Judge Judy, suing a woman for veterinary bills he claimed he incurred when he took in her dog. (Judge Judy ruled against him.)

Bears Chairman George McCaskey says his team wasn?t ?properly prepared? for injuries last season.

The Lions will owe some money to the league office if any more players are suspended this year.

Said Packers WR Donald Driver, ?We?ve got to continue to improve. Going 15-1 is nice, but to lose in the playoffs was very tough. It sits in your stomach for a long time. Our goal right now is to make sure that we bounce back and we get to the postseason. If you get to the postseason, it starts all over again. If we get back to the Super Bowl, that would be great. It took 13 years to win my first one, I don?t want it to take another 13 years before I win another one.?

The attitude toward Vikings WR Percy Harvin in Minnesota is that he has baggage, but not enough baggage to send him packing.

Falcons TE Michael Palmer is trying to export American football to Serbia.

Panthers LB Thomas Davis is trying to make history by becoming the first player to return to the field after three ACL tears.

The Saints still haven?t said who will coach the team while interim head coach Joe Vitt is suspended in Weeks 1-6.

Eric LeGrand, the paralyzed former Rutgers player who?s now with the Buccaneers, will write two books (one for adults and one for children) about his life.

The widow of former Cardinal Pat Tillman has published a letter he wrote her, to be read in the event of his death.

Do the Rams have a chance of going worst-to-first in the NFC West?

Issues continue to arise over the funding of the 49ers? new stadium.

Seahawks rookie Bruce Irvin predicts he?ll have double-digit sacks.

Where is the ME in Mommy?: What I Think About: Pot Luck Ettiquette

This Friday we are hosting a potluck BBQ at our house in order to spend time with some friends visiting from out of town.

As a general rule I don't do potlucks. ?I love to be a hostess and don't mind doing everything, from flatware and drinks to appetizers and the main dish. ?I'm controlling that way.

But really, I just don't trust people to bring food. ?I've been burned by one to many potlucks.

Let me explain.

It used to be that a potluck meant everyone brought a main course (in a pot. ?I know, I just blew your mind) and a side to share (the side could be an appetizer, salad, or dessert). ?So, you'd be at a potluck with casseroles and lasagnas galore. ?It was easy to fill up on food--even if you aren't a casserole fan you just sucked it up for this one event.

But as people got busier, those casseroles turned into take out pizza and deli fried chicken. No shame in that. ?At least it was still a main dish.

Somewhere around 10 years ago, however, a new trend started. ?Everyone signed up to attend a potluck and then showed up with a bag of chips or a package of store bought cookies. ?No main dish. Nothing in a pot (and probably no pot in those store bought brownies either). ?Okay, generally one person still brings a main dish and the group divvies out the tatertot casserole one tatertot at a time. ?For the most part, however, everyone eats a meager handful of chips, eats one cookie or brownie and goes home hungry.

The result: people like me who either 1. Do all the cooking or 2. ?Tell attendees exactly what to bring.

Summer tends to equal potluck so I'd like to propose the following potluck rules.

  1. Bring your own chair/cups/plates/silverware/napkins. Oh, and a serving spoon for your food.
  2. Each family unit needs to bring one main dish (casseroles optional). ?This main dish should feed at least 8 people. ?Think: sandwich platter, pizza, chicken wings, lasagna, sloppy joes, pulled beef/pork, sushi platter etc.
  3. Each family unit needs to bring one side to share (in addition to the main dish). ?The side can be fruit, veggies, a bag of chips, a package of cookies or brownies, sliced watermelon, etc. ?It should be enough to feed at least 8 people.
  4. Unless otherwise stated, bring something to drink--especially if you want alcohol.
  5. Leave your pets at home (unless they were invited).

If each family unit followed these rules, everyone could get enough to eat and drink and enjoy all that food without the scent of dog poo. ?Doesn't that sound nice?

What I think is potlucks are a great idea but unless people bring a main dish and a side, you might as well just call it "Chips for Lunch".

Did I miss any essential rules?

Thanks, Shell for letting me Pour My Heart Out on your blog.

Fighting Pet Mistreatment Using Love And Horse Supplement

A horse supplement can help your horse recover physically. The proper care and attention can help it recover emotionally. Obviously a Doctor needs to be called out to see the abused horse. They can talk about details that you might not have observed and direct you in the best ways to proceed. The horse must get their shots brought up to date to protect them and the remainder of your herd. Remember, the horse is most probably not accustomed to being caressed ? or may have been beaten.

Proceed delicately and quietly to get the best results. Basics ? plenty of water and clean good quality hay- as much as they desire and a clean-bedded area helps. Keep your new horse from the others in case they might have something contagious. Quarantine the new horse for about one or two weeks if your Vet suggests it. It?s easier for a new horse to become used to his new area a little at a time, especially if the new horse has had a rough time of it. Don?t put a new horse that?s weak into a field with healthy animals. They would not embrace him with open arms, but rather with chasing as well as kicking.

To a weak horse, this could indicate serious trauma. If the brand new horse has problems standing up, then putting him out together with other horses wouldn?t be wise. In case the horse has open oozing injuries, then putting him out together with other animals wouldn?t be smart. If the horse has mobility difficulties of any type then really consider it. Your Veterinarian will advise when you might add more activity to his program.

If you have an abused dog, adopting a dog who?s been neglected or mistreated can give you great joy, but it needs more patience and accountability than adopting a dog conceived in normal settings. Rescue dogs are desperately in need of love and affection. They might have been mistreated, malnourished, neglected or abandoned. Because of this, rescue dogs are often nervous and distrustful of humans. Many people warn that a rescue animal will always be cautious about humans, and this belief tends to limit their odds of getting adopted. However rescue animals could make caring, grateful buddies after they gain faith.

First of all, don?t expect things to change right away and don?t have too high expectations for the end result. It usually takes a year to transform a reclusive, mistreated pet to a family-friendly companion. Even so, don?t expect a miracle: You are not likely to achieve complete resolution of the issues. Previously mistreated pets can become accepting of their human family members but making them into well-rounded sociable successes is an almost impossible task.

A horse supplement along with the proper care can help your pet. Having said that, to try such therapeutic work can be a rewarding challenge, and those who have met with success never regret the decision they made to make a formerly miserable pet happy and save its life. Here is how to carry on. Make your pet feel needed and loved. Allow your brand new pet to get accustomed to you at his personal rate ? in no way try to force the issue. Protect your pet against whatsoever he fears. Build the pet?s confidence by introducing him to situations in which you plan for him to become successful (arrange a positive outcome). Strive for clear communication together with your pet. Always assure adequate exercise and a proper diet. Give your new pet a secure place where he could go to escape from it all.

Equine experts have numerous advice and professional opinions on how you take excellent care of your precious equines when using the best Supplement in their day-to-day diet regime.

Join us tomorrow for Microsoft's Windows Phone Summit

If you thought that Microsoft was done making news this week you'd be soundly mistaken.

Yes, it debuted its Surface tablet family at an event in Los Angeles only yesterday, but tomorrow, June 20, the software (and I guess now hardware) giant is heading up the California coast to San Francisco for a Windows Phone Developer Summit. CNET will be there to bring you the story live.

Despite its name, this isn't just a developer confab. As CNET's Jessica Dolcourt wrote earlier today, we expect to see company pull some of the wraps off Windows Phone 8. Code-named Apollo, the next generation of Microsoft's smartphone OS should support, among other things, removable microSD card storage, NFC, new screen resolutions, and multicore processors. And, of course, Windows Phone 8 may look a bit like Windows 8.

ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley has a full list of rumored features, but other highlights include a new Zune PC client software with an update mechanism more akin to ActiveSync and an improved (and desperately needed) Skype app. At this point we don't expect Microsoft to reveal any Windows Phone 8 hardware.

Whatever happens, Jessica, Lynn La, and Josh Lowensohn will be on site at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown San Francisco to bring you the news. Though the event runs all day, but we'll be live blogging the opening keynote. That begins at Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT and we'll kick off our coverage at 8:45 a.m PT. You can go here to find out where that is in your time zone, as well as set a reminder.

To follow along, you can just bookmark this link and come back to it Monday morning.

Microsoft details deep Skype integration in Windows 8

Microsoft details deep Skype integration in Windows 8

Microsoft's been letting loose all of Windows Phone 8's secrets this morning, and the latest tidbit is all about VoIP calling. Turns out, the team in Redmond's really putting that money it spent on Skype to good use by integrating the video chatting/VoIP service deeply in its new mobile OS. From a user perspective, incoming Skype calls are treated like cellular communications, meaning that they appear as regular calls and are integrated with standard phone features -- like call waiting -- to maintain a seamless calling experience. The VoIP apps continue to run in the background, of course, thanks to WP8's new multitasking capabilities, and VoIP integration will be available to all developers.

Repair Your Credit By Following These Tips | Finance-411

Paying off your outstanding debt is a wonderful way to improve your credit score. Agencies that specialize in helping people with credit issues can be a major assistance.

Consumers should carefully research credit counseling agencies before choosing one with which to work. Many companies are legitimate and hold your best interests as a priority, but some are outright scams. Some will try to cheat you. Before you conduct any business with a credit counselor, check into their legitimacy.

Start paying your bills in order to repair your credit. More importantly, you need to start paying your bills in full and on time. As soon as you have cleared those old debts, you will see an immediate improvement in your credit score.

Always examine your monthly credit card bill to make sure everything is accurate. if you find any, then you need to get in touch with the company right away so this does not become a blemish on your credit record.

The best way to begin a credit repair project is to pay off outstanding debt, and pay future bills on time. Not only are debts a hassle, but they can affect your credit score. Create a budget that is realistic and be sure to pay all your debts as much as possible. If you don?t have any debt, your credit score will be higher.

Make sure you will get a plan in writing if you decide a payment plan is the best option for you with your creditor. Having documentation is important for your records but also protects you in case a creditor changes their mind. You also want it in writing if it gets paid off so you can go ahead and send it to credit reporting agencies.

Paying your bills on time is a crucial part of your credit score. Make use of payment reminders to help you remember to make your payments on time. There are a number of methods you can use to accomplish this. You can set your computer or phone to remind you, or you can have reminders marked in your calendar.

One way to improve an ailing credit score is to open new lines of credit, and be scrupulous about paying them off quickly. It proves that you are being more responsible and can help your credit standing.

The number one method of successful credit repair is paying off any debts that are outstanding. If you still have unpaid debt, repairing your credit will be a lot of trouble.

You can get a house mortgaged at the snap of a finger if you have a high credit score. Staying current with your mortgage payments is a way to raise your credit score even more. Once you own a home, you will have financial stability secured by your assets, thus a good credit score. If you have to take out a loan, this will help you.

Artificial Satellite Kinds | Netflix Alternatives

A celestial human body orbiting an additional celestial entire body of greater dimension is a satellite. An synthetic satellite is a produced object or vehicle supposed to orbit the earth, the moon, or yet another celestial entire body. Considering that October fourth, 1957 humanity is able of placing man-made satellites in orbit around the earth. The Russians had been the very first with Sputnik a little satellite that orbited the earth for a few of months and transmitted beeps for 21 days.

The USA launched its very first satellite on January 31st, 1958. This satellite was named Explorer 1, and by means of the data transmitted again to earth by Explorer one, experts found out the van Allen radiation belts, zones in place about the earth, and the planets Jupiter and Saturn, containing large-electricity protons and electrons.

fifty several years in the past artificial satellites did not exist. Because Sputnik far more than 4800 satellites have been launched by governments and personal businesses about the globe. Satellites are utilised for satellite Tv of study course, but there are several a lot more reasons for satellites.

Varieties of Satellites

The Moon is a satellite of the earth the earth is a satellite of the sunlight. The very first is named a moon, the second a planet. Man produced (man-made) satellites orbit any celestial physique and are constantly called a satellite, whether they orbit the earth, the moon, the sun or any other celestial physique.

We use satellites for various functions and all satellites can be positioned in a single of the following groups:

Communications Satellites

Distribution of tv and audio signals, and telephone connections through satellite are done by Communications Satellites. These kinds of communications normally need to have a satellite in geostationary orbit. In 1964 the US Section of Defense introduced the very first satellite that was positioned in geostationary orbit. This satellite was named Syncom three.

These days geostationary satellites are used to give voice, audio and video clip communications like satellite Television by Dish Community Satellite.

Navigation Satellites

These satellites had been of massive support to transportation firms, specifically transportation more than water and by means of the air. The US GPS satellites are in Minimal Earth Orbit (LEO) and can establish situation with a precision of one cm (.four inch). Nonetheless, that very specific positioning is accessible for army reasons only. For commercial use the precision is significantly less correct.

Navigation satellites are also employed for distance measurements for instance in between structures.

Climate Satellites

Observing the earth is the job for climate satellites, and then specifically what transpires in the ambiance. Distinct sorts of cameras, like infrared and regular cameras are utilised to observe possibly the identical component of the earth, from a geostationary orbit, or much more carefully from roman policier orbits to get more in depth images. These low orbit weather satellites concentrate far more on the review of the ambiance than on the present weather conditions it self.

Navy Satellites

Very equivalent to weather conditions satellites, navy satellites are also used for observing the earth. Generally with greater resolution cameras and rather of regular communications equipment, they use encryption as well. Occasionally these sorts of satellites have really diverse kinds of orbits. For instance a quite elliptical orbit which provides the satellite as considerably away from the earth as the moon and as near to the earth that it shortly enters the environment, to get as near as attainable to the earth surface without falling back again to earth.

Probably a lot of much more tactics are utilized, but for apparent causes, these are unknown.

Scientific Satellites

Observing the earth for scientific reasons is also extremely good attainable with satellites. Generating maps with very low roman policier orbits satellites for instance, but also measuring the precise condition of the earth, geological analysis, and many others can all gain tremendously from scientific satellites.

But scientific satellites are not just employed for observing the earth. The investigation of place positive aspects also from scientific satellites. For instance the Hubble Satellite which actually is a enormous telescope that orbits the earth. Simply because the Hubble telescope isn?t going to have to ?see? by way of the ambiance it can generate a lot clearer and detailed photos than earth primarily based telescopes.

Knowledge of fractions and long division predicts long-term math success

ScienceDaily (June 15, 2012) ? From factory workers to Wall Street bankers, a reasonable proficiency in math is a crucial requirement for most well-paying jobs in a modern economy. Yet, over the past 30 years, mathematics achievement of U.S. high school students has remained stagnant -- and significantly behind many other countries, including China, Japan, Finland, the Netherlands and Canada.

A research team led by Carnegie Mellon University's Robert Siegler has identified a major source of the gap -- U. S. students' inadequate knowledge of fractions and division. Although fractions and division are taught in elementary school, even many college students have poor knowledge of them. The research team found that fifth graders' understanding of fractions and division predicted high school students' knowledge of algebra and overall math achievement, even after statistically controlling for parents' education and income and for the children's own age, gender, I.Q., reading comprehension, working memory, and knowledge of whole number addition, subtraction and multiplication. Published in Psychological Science, the findings demonstrate an immediate need to improve teaching and learning of fractions and division.

"We suspected that early knowledge in these areas was absolutely crucial to later learning of more advanced mathematics, but did not have any evidence until now," said Siegler, the Teresa Heinz Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon. "The clear message is that we need to improve instruction in long division and fractions, which will require helping teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts that underlie these mathematical operations. At present, many teachers lack this understanding. Because mastery of fractions, ratios and proportions is necessary in a high percentage of contemporary occupations, we need to start making these improvements now."

The research, supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences and by the National Science Foundation's Developmental and Learning Science Group at the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Directorate, was conducted by a team of eight investigators: Siegler; U.C. Irvine's Greg J. Duncan; the University of Michigan's Pamela E. Davis-Kean, Maria Ines Susperreguy and Meichu Chen; the University of London's Kathryn Duckworth; the University of Chicago's Amy Claessens; and Vanderbilt University's Mimi Engel.

For the study, the team examined two nationally representative data sets, one from the U.S. and one from the United Kingdom. The U.S. set included 599 children who were tested in 1997 as 10-12 year-olds and again in 2002 as 15-17-year-olds. The set from the U.K. included 3,677 children who were tested in 1980 as 10-year-olds and in 1986 as 16-year-olds. The importance of fractions and division for long-term mathematics learning was evident in both data sets, despite the data being collected in two different countries almost 20 years apart.

"This research is a good demonstration of what collaborations between psychologists, economists, public policy analysts and education scientists can create," said Davis-Kean, associate professor of psychology at Michigan. "Instead of relying on results from a single study, this study replicates findings across two national data sets in two different countries, which strengthens our confidence in the results."

Rob Ochsendorf, program officer for special education research at the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences added, "This study is critical for providing empirical and general confirmation of the crucial role of division and fractions proficiency for long-term success in mathematics for all students. The results provide important cues to educators and researchers regarding the skills that are ripe for intervention in order to improve overall mathematics achievement in the U.S."

New action for ancient heart drug

Friday, June 15, 2012

An ancient heart drug that's inspired the work of herbalists and poets for centuries may treat a condition that plagues millions of overstressed and overweight Americans today.

Since the 13th century, the herb Foxglove has been used to cleanse wounds and its dried leaves were brewed by Native Americans to treat leg swelling caused by heart problems.

In an article published online today in Molecular Pharmacology, researchers at the University of Michigan Health System reveal that digoxin, the active ingredient in digitalis, or Foxglove, can enhance the body's own protective mechanism against high blood pressure and heart failure.

High blood pressure can be prevented by reducing salt intake, being active and keeping a healthy weight, but about 1 in 3 Americans has high blood pressure, also called hypertension, which can damage the body in many ways.

Most current treatments prevent excess hormone and stress signals that can lead to high blood pressure and heart failure.

But recent studies have found that the body has the ability to keep excess stimulation in check through production of a family of inhibitors called RGS proteins.

Researchers looked for ways to "re-purpose" old drugs to tap into this protective mechanism which is lost among some individuals with high blood pressure and heart failure.

"We tested several thousand known drugs and bioactive molecules for a potential role in enhancing RGS2 and/or RGS4 expression and function and have identified a novel mechanism for digoxin," says lead study author Benita Sjogren, Ph.D., a research fellow in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan.

Case histories collected by Dr. William Withering in 1775 determined that Foxglove contained the active ingredient, digoxin, now an important drug for treating patients with congestive heart failure.

This new action of digoxin was found by treating engineered human kidney cells with thousands of known drugs in a high-throughput screen at the U-M Center for Chemical Genomics. Digoxin was then shown to have similar actions in isolated mouse blood vessel cells.

"In addition to test tube studies, low dose digoxin, the active ingredient of digitalis, was able to increase RGS2 levels in the heart and kidney," says senior study author and pharmacologist Rick Neubig, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pharmacology, associate professor of internal medicine, and co-director of the Center for Chemical Genomics at the University of Michigan.

"This new action of digoxin could help explain the fact that low doses seem to improve the survival of heart failure patients. It also suggests new uses for low dose digoxin or other drugs that can activate this protective mechanism," he says.

Neubig's lab at the U-M focuses on the large family of RGS proteins and the role they play in the function of the brain, heart, immunity and cancer and how they can be exploited in therapeutics.

Hidden vitamin in milk yields remarkable health benefits

Friday, June 15, 2012

A novel form of vitamin B3 found in milk in small quantities produces remarkable health benefits in mice when high doses are administered, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The findings, recently reported in the June 2012 issue of the journal, Cell Metabolism, reveal that high doses of the vitamin precursor, nicotinamide riboside (NR) ? a cousin of niacin ? prevent obesity in mice that are fed a fatty diet, and also increase muscle performance, improve energy expenditure and prevent diabetes development, all without side effects.

The Swiss researchers, led by Dr. Johan Auwerx, performed the mouse experiments, while the ability to give the animals sufficient doses of NR was made possible by Weill Cornell Medical College researchers, who played key roles in uncovering the biological story of NR.

"This study is very important. It shows that in animals, the use of NR offers the health benefits of a low-calorie diet and exercise ? without doing either one," says Dr. Anthony Sauve, associate professor of Pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Sauve is the pharmacologist and organic chemist who has invented a simple method for efficiently synthesizing NR in large scale. He was first to show that NR increases nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) levels in mammalian cells. NAD is a central player in energy metabolism. He has pioneered research into the compound, and he is a leader in investigating how NAD can signal adaptation in cells and in physiology.

"The research also suggests that the effects of NR could be even broader," Dr. Sauve says. "The bottom line is that NR improves the function of mitochondria, the cell's energy factories. Mitochondrial decline is the hallmark of many diseases associated with aging, such as cancer and neurodegeneration, and NR supplementation boosts mitochondrial functioning."

The Swiss researchers call NR a "hidden vitamin" that is believed to also be present in many other foods, although levels are low and difficult to measure. Nevertheless, the effects of NR on metabolism "are nothing short of astonishing."

Got nicotinamide riboside?

The study depended on a series of crucial discoveries by Dr. Sauve and his laboratory colleagues.

NR, related to niacin and other common forms of vitamin B3, was first investigated more than 60 years ago by a Stanford researcher and 1959 Nobel Laureate, Arthur Kornberg. But little more was known about its effects in mammals until Dr. Sauve discovered the effect NR had in stimulating levels of NAD in mammalian cells ? work he published in 2007.

NAD allows sugars, fats, and proteins to be converted into energy. Dr. Sauve's research provided the first evidence that NR enhances NAD levels in the mitochondria in mammalian cells in culture. These findings are published in the current study. These cell-based observations were key to the demonstration that NR could stimulate tissue NAD levels in animals, and that it could stimulate NAD-dependent sirtuins, which adapt physiology to the low calorie diets that are known to extend the lifespan of many organisms.

Dr. Sauve invented a relatively simple method for efficiently synthesizing NR in large scale so that its health benefits can be studied. This methodology, which makes it possible to make NR commercially available, was patented by Cornell's Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercialization and subsequently licensed to ChromaDex Corporation.

The development of a means to synthesize NR in adequate quantities was crucial to the current research, and the Sauve lab provided methods and NR to make the study possible. In addition, the biological observations on the effects of NR on NAD levels in cells and on mitochondria were key to the study. Finally, the Sauve laboratory has developed state of the art analytical methods to determine NAD levels in cells, tissues and organelles, and the laboratory provided several key metabolic measurements highlighted in the study.

"Our published scientific work has verified that NR is perhaps the most potent NAD enhancing agent ever identified," he says. His laboratory is also widely recognized for developing an expertise in the measurement of NAD metabolism in cell tissues.

With this compound, the Swiss researchers found that mice on a high-fat diet supplemented with NR gained significantly less weight (60 percent) than mice fed the same diet without NR, even though the mice supplemented with NR ate the same amount of food as mice on the high fat diet not treated with NR. They had improved energy. They were in better shape than the untreated mice, with significantly better endurance and stronger muscles. Additionally, none of the treated mice developed diabetes, as seen in the untreated mice on the high fat diet. And when fed a normal diet, NR treated mice had improved sensitivity to insulin. The NR treated mice also showed lower cholesterol levels. All of these benefits came without toxicity.

While the new study demonstrates that high doses of NR can largely prevent the negative health consequences of a poor diet in mice, Dr. Sauve stresses that the effects of high doses of the vitamin in humans have not been evaluated. "It is important to keep in mind that the amount of NR in milk and other foods appears to be small. We don't know what effects NR would have in humans at relatively high doses," he says.

"Still, we have very encouraging evidence of benefits of NR and NAD augmentation in general from this animal study ? and much more work to do," he says.

(AP) ? As quick as Tiger Woods grabbed the U.S. Open lead he lost it

To a 17-year-old qualifier, no less.

Going from a first pump to dropping his clubs all over the course, Woods birdied the par-3 third to take a one-shot lead Friday before rolling off three straight bogeys to fall three shots behind 17-year-old Beau Hossler. Woods was 2-over par through eight holes in the second round and 1 over for the tournament.

Hossler made up two strokes in three holes, including a birdie on the par-4 first ? which played tougher than any hole on the course in the opening round. He was 2 under through 11 holes and the championship.

The kid from Rancho Santa Margarita down the California coast survived local and sectional qualifying at nearby Daly City, the second straight year he sneaked into this major. Now he's giving a 14-time major champion all he can handle.

That's the kind of week it has been so far at The Olympic Club.

Jim Furyk shot a 1-under 69 to move to 1 under for the 36-hole clubhouse lead. Michael Thompson, the leader after 18 holes, was 5 over for the day and three strokes back of Hossler.

Top-ranked Luke Donald and defending champion Rory McIlroy were likely going to miss the cut in what would be swift and stunning exits.

Donald came to the U.S. Open with six wins in the past 18 months, more than any other player. Last year, the 34-year-old Englishman pulled off an unprecedented feat by topping the money lists on both the PGA and European tours.

Now he'll probably miss the weekend for the third time in nine U.S. Open starts.

Donald followed his birdie-free 79 ? which even 14-year-old qualifier Andy Zhang matched Thursday ? with a less erratic second round. He had five bogeys and three birdies to card a 72, leaving him at an eye-popping 11 under and still without a major.

"That's the one part of my golfing resume in the last few years, especially, that I need to continually address and continually improve," Donald said. "I want to win one more than any of you guys know."

McIlroy's slide might be even more startling.

He mixed five bogeys ? including one on his final hole ? with a pair of birdies for a second-round 73. The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland shattered U.S. Open records last June at rain-softened Congressional, finishing at 268 to break the 72-hole record by four shots, and his 16-under total was four better than Woods' mark at Pebble Beach in 2000.

What a pushover that course turned out to be.

Olympic Club has restored "golf's toughest test" and then some.

The tight, twisting fairways on the unleveled Lake Course had most of the field hacking out of rough and digging into sand for shots. Others searched for balls in the colossal cypress trees or pushed putts all over the rock-hard greens.

Sergio Garcia, who reached the green in two on the 11th, was so upset when he missed a 5-foot putt to make bogey that he took a half-swing at the ball and yelled a couple of cuss words.

The two accomplished left-handers in Woods' group, Mickelson and Masters champion Bubba Watson also faced the prospect of missing the cut entering the second round. Mickelson opened with a 76, and Watson shot 78.

At least they still had a round to play.

Calm and cool conditions under a light layer of fog provided a majestic backdrop of San Francisco's steep hills when the first groups teed off shortly after 7 a.m. A blue sky and warmer ? but still crisp ? temperatures followed, speeding those already fast and fickle fairways.

It could be the last time most players enjoy the serene setting.

The U.S. Golf Association decided this year to eliminate the 10-shot rule in which players within 10 strokes of the lead make the cut. Starting at this year's championship, the cut will be the top 60 and ties.

The cut line started was at 5 over or better when the first morning groups finished. In all likelihood, it will be at least 7 over.

USGA executive director Mike Davis said the idea behind the new rule was to limit the number of players making the cut ? 108 did so Oakland Hills in 1996 ? and prevent slow play that could perhaps force a two-tee start in threesomes.

Not that Woods will need to worry about that.

Woods was in control in the first round, finding fairways, sticking greens and avoiding the thick rough and towering trees that line the course built on the side of a hill that separates the Pacific Ocean from Lake Merced. He had consecutive birdies late in his round, including a 35-foot putt that banged into the back of the cup on No. 5.

Emotional reactivity elevated from sleep loss, particularly in those already anxious

DARIEN, IL New research shows that sleep loss markedly exaggerates the degree to which we anticipate impending emotional events, particularly among highly anxious people, who are especially vulnerable.

Two common features of anxiety disorders are sleep loss and an amplification of emotional response. Results from the new study suggest that these features may not be independent of one another but may interact instead.

Researchers from the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, used brain scanning on 18 healthy adults in two separate sessions, one after a normal night's sleep and a second after a night of sleep deprivation. During both sessions, participants were exposed to an emotional task that involved a period of anticipating a potentially negative experience (an unpleasant visual image) or a potentially benign experience (a neutral visual image).

The fMRI scans showed that sleep deprivation significantly amplified the build-up of anticipatory activity in deep emotional brain centers, especially the amygdala, a part of the brain associated with responding to negative and unpleasant experiences. In some of these emotional centers of the brain, sleep deprivation detrimentally triggered an increase in anticipatory reaction by more than 60 percent.

In addition, the researchers found that the strength of this sleep deprivation effect was related to how naturally anxious the participants were. Those people who were more anxious showed the greatest vulnerability to the aggravating effects of sleep deprivation. The results suggest that anxiety may significantly elevate the emotional dysfunction and risk associated with insufficient sleep.

"Anticipation is a fundamental brain process, a common survival mechanism across numerous species," said Andrea Goldstein, lead author of the study and a graduate student in the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory. "Our results suggest that just one night of sleep loss significantly alters the optimal functioning of this essential brain process, especially among anxious individuals. This is perhaps never more relevant considering the continued erosion of sleep time that continues to occur across society."
