Monument to KKK leader creates controversy

Montgomery Advertiser via The Associated Press/file

A monument honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest in Selma, Ala., in 2011.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

The renovation of a monument honoring a Civil War Confederate general, who was the first "Grand Wizard" of the Ku Klux Klan, is once more creating controversy in Selma, Ala., 11 years after protesters got it moved off of public property.

The memorial is being?repaired after the bust of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest was stolen in March from the 7-foot-tall?granite monument?it rested upon at a cemetery in Selma, reported The Birmingham News. A group known as the Friends of Forrest are replacing it, according to local media; and the United Daughters of the Confederacy are adding a pedestal and fencing to make it harder to steal, Selma City Council President Dr. Cecil Williamson told NBC News.

"I would recommend this man (Forrest) for any young people to model his life after," Todd Kiscaden, of Friends of Forrest, told?local NBC affiliate WSFA 12 News. "The man always led from the front. He did what he said he was going to do. He took care of his people, and his people included both races."

Not everyone remembers the general that way.

Though Forrest was one of the Confederacy?s better generals and their best cavalry leader, he was an ?extreme racist,? Mark Pitcavage, an expert of military history and right-wing extremism at the Anti-Defamation League, told NBC News.

Renovations on an Alabama monument honoring the Ku Klux Klan's founder has sparked outrage from critics who are pushing to stop the expansion. WSFA's Samuel King reports.

Men under his command killed ?in cold blood? 250 black soldiers fighting for the Union who were captured at Fort Pillow in Tennessee, Pitcavage said. ?No one has ever proven conclusively that Forrest himself ordered it, but at the very least this was the sort of thing he was letting his men do,? he added. A federal congressional committee investigating the April 12, 1864, killings received testimony that as many as 200 black soldiers were slain after they surrendered at Fort Pillow.

"Here's a man who killed African-Americans who had surrendered, who were not a threat to anybody," Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma, told WSFA. ?And yet we are talking about a monument to him.?

Forrest, a slave owner and a slave trader, was tapped to be the Ku Klux Klan?s first Grand Wizard ? or supreme leader, the KKK?s highest position -- at a meeting in April 1867, according to Pitcavage and the Anti-Defamation League.

?Although he was the titular head of the entire Ku Klux Klan, in practice he didn?t have much influence beyond Tennessee. It?s not like the Internet was there and he could give guidance to all of his followers across the country,? Pitcavage said.

The Klan was ?unbelievably violent,? killing many people and burning down schools and churches, leading Forrest to disband it in 1868 because the Grant administration decided to send federal troops to the South to maintain public order, Pitcavage said.

?All he (Forrest) did was issue a formal order for appearance's sake, knowing that the Klan was not going to disappear and the Klan did not disappear. It continued full force for a number of years, but he was no longer officially its head after that point,? he said.

'A public outcry' when statue first went up
The first monument to Forrest was put up on city property in October 2000 under the permission of the local government administration in power at the time. People dumped trashed on it and held a mock lynching, tying rope around it in protest, Williamson said. With a new mayor in office and ?such a public outcry from parts of the community about it being on public property,? the city council voted to move it in 2001, he added.

The new site is on an acre of land donated to the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1877, said Williamson, adding that he believed the group was in control of the lot. NBC News? efforts to reach the group for comment were not successful.

?Once it was moved it had just basically been sitting out there for the past 11 years undisturbed until the bust was stolen,? Williamson said. ?It was like most people in town did not know or did not care that it was even out in the cemetery.?

But, Malika Sanders-Fortier, who described herself as a community leader in Selma, has started a petition calling for the city council to remove the monument.

"Monuments celebrating violent racism and intolerance have no place in this country, let alone in a city like Selma, where the families of those attacked by the Klan still live," she wrote in her petition, which had collected more than 15,000 signatures as of Wednesday.

But Williamson said it wasn't a city matter, noting the monument didn't belong to the local government, and that, as far as he knew, it was not on city property.

New Best Buy CEO is $6.25 million man

Lucas Jackson / Reuters

The $6 million dollar man. Hubert Joly, former president and chief executive officer of Carlson, who has been named president and ceo of retailer Best Buy.

By Martha C. White

Best Buy's decision to put a hospitality industry veteran at the helm of the troubled electronics retailer was surprising enough, but one condition of?Hubert Joly's compensation package raised even more eyebrows: A stipulation that if the French citizen can't get authorization to work in the U.S., he will receive a payout of $6.25 million.

"I have never seen anything like this before, in my 19 years of researching executive pay," Paul Hodgson, chief research analyst at GMI Ratings, said via email, dubbing the deal a "golden green card."

"I can understand some payment but this does seem a windfall," John Coffee, a professor at Columbia Law School who specializes in corporate governance issues, said via email. "?The theory must be that he is assuming the risk of leaving his current employer... but we do not know what his existing compensation is."

Best Buy's incoming CEO formerly was CEO of Carlson, a privately-held hotel and restaurant company. Sam Hamadeh, CEO of private market research firm PrivCo, estimated based on Carlson's size and corporate structure that Joly drew a base salary of around $1 million, with an additional $2 million or $3 million in performance incentives.

"This package was developed in consultation with leading search and compensation firms and is in-line with best practice for Fortune 50 companies," a Best Buy spokesperson said via email.

At?$1.175 million, Joly's base salary isn't eye-popping. But cash and stock incentives could inflate that compensation package as high as $32 million if Joly can meet certain benchmarks in his new position.

The Best Buy spokesperson said, "Two thirds of the amount...?is a one-time payment intended solely to make Mr. Joly whole for the outstanding compensation he left behind in departing Carlson, his previous employer. The amount that can accurately be described as compensation going forward is weighted approximately 90 percent to variable incentives."

The news of Joly's appointment came a day before the company announced?net earnings of $12 million for the quarter, compared to $150 million in the same quarter last year. The?news sent Best Buy's stock tumbling.?

Some compensation experts said the struggling big-box retailer might not have had much of a choice but to offer Joly a compensation package with such an extraordinary stipulation. "It seems like a very high amount and yet... he's in a strong negotiating position," said John Challenger, CEO of executive outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas. Challenger said he didn't know of a similar situation in which an incoming chief executive would be paid even if he was unable to accept the job.

"When you have the former owner trying to take the company private, talent that is capable comes with circumstances that are unique," said Gayle Mattson, executive vice president and global leader of the board and CEO practice at DHR International.

Best Buy is currently engaged in a takeover fight with its founder and former chairman, Richard Schulze, who?has offered to buy the struggling electronics retailer and take it private in a deal that values the company at more than $8.1 billion

Analysts were mixed in their assessment of Joly. "We view this move as a positive as it could bring the company some much needed energy and a differentiated perspective," Raymond James analyst Dan Wewer said in a research note.?

R.J. Hottovy, an analyst at Morningstar, was more pessimistic in an interview with?CNBC?as he discussed secular problems facing the consumer electronics retailer, saying the company's margins are in a "downward spiral" and that "Best Buy just can?t compete as it?s currently structured."

Syrian regime forces, rebels in major Damascus clashes, at least 35 killed

BEIRUT - Syrian regime forces shelled two central Damascus districts Wednesday before troops backed by tanks swept through to carry out house-to-house raids, killing at least 35 suspected rebels, in a major flare-up of fighting in the Syrian capital, activists said.

In a particularly hard-hit northern district, activists said they discovered dozens of bodies that appeared to have been shot execution-style. Such gruesome reports have become increasingly common in recent months as the civil war has taken on heavy sectarian undertones.

The capital is one of many fronts President Bashar Assad's regime is struggling to contain as the 17-month-old rebellion against his rule gains strength.

Government forces are also engaged in a major battle for control of the northern city of Aleppo as well as smaller scale operations in the country's south, east and centre.

On the diplomatic front, a senior U.N. official said Iran's arms supplies to Syria violated U.N. sanctions. France also indicated it has provided the rebels with communication and protection equipment but cautioned against foreign intervention without a U.N. mandate.

A prominent opposition figure, meanwhile, rejected as "more lies" comments by a senior Syrian official that Damascus would be willing to discuss Assad's resignation but only after the opposition agreed to join in negotiating a peaceful settlement.

"As for his resignation, making his resignation a condition for dialogue effectively makes holding such a dialogue impossible," said the official, Deputy Foreign Minister Qadri Jamil. "During the negotiating process any issues can be discussed, and we are ready to discuss even this issue."

Reached in Turkey, Adib Shishakly of the Syrian National Council, a key umbrella opposition group, said: "It's the first time that we hear such talk, but it's difficult to believe. We have grown accustomed to the regime's lies."

Around dawn Wednesday, regime forces in Damascus rained mortar shells on the upscale Kafar Soussa area ? home to the foreign ministry, the prime minister's office and several foreign embassies ? and adjacent Nahr Eishah, activists said.

Government troops appeared to be shelling the districts from the Qasioun mountain overlooking the capital, a Damascus resident said on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.

The attacks may have been designed to kill or capture rebel mortar teams who have used the two neighbourhoods in recent days to target the city's strategically located Mazzeh military airport, activists said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 24 people were killed in Kafar Soussa on Wednesday and fierce battles were raging in an area just outside the neighbourhood.

An activist in Kafar Soussa reached on Skype corroborated the Observatory's findings. He also spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared reprisals. The reports could not be independently verified.

Earlier, an activist who only wanted to be identified by the name Bassam for fear of retribution, said as many as 22 tanks stormed Kafar Soussa with about 20 soldiers on foot behind each one. He spoke via Skype from central Damascus.

Bassam and the Observatory also reported heavy government shelling of Nahr Eishah early Wednesday. They said regime forces then searched houses for rebels. Bassam said as many as 12 people were killed in Nahr Eishah, while the Observatory put the death toll at eight, saying they were all men shot dead by troops.

Amateur videos posted by activists on the Internet showed tanks rumbling into Nahr Eishah, kicking up a cloud of dust as the sound of gunfire is heard in the background. The authenticity of the videos could not be verified.

It was not clear whether those killed in the two areas died in the shelling or later government raids. Activists, including the one reached by Skype in Kafar Soussa, spoke of execution-style killings in both areas.

As many as 46 bodies of people shot execution-style were found in the northern Damascus district of Qaboun, the Local Coordination Committees activist network said. The Observatory reported "dozens of bodies who appeared to have been shot at close range" there.

Syria's civil war has its roots in a mostly peaceful uprising against Assad's regime that began in March last year. The uprising grew increasingly violent as the government launched a brutal crackdown on protesters, prompting many to take up arms to forcefully overthrow Assad's regime.

The conflict has defied all international efforts to end it. At least 20,000 people have been killed, according to human rights activists.

The U.N.'s political chief Jeffrey Feltman said Iran's delivery of weapons to the Syrian government was an apparent violation of U.N. sanctions banning arms exports by Tehran. He raised the issue in Wednesday's monthly Mideast briefing to the U.N. Security Council.

Feltman said the Syrian government and opposition were focusing on the use of force, with the government using heavy weapons on populated areas and the Syrian people "suffering grievously from the appalling further militarization of this conflict."

Iran, together with Russia and China, are the Syrian regime's strongest backers.

On Wednesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry accused Western powers of "openly instigating" Syrian opposition groups to take up arms against Assad's regime. The West, it said, "has done nothing" to urge the Syrian opposition to start a dialogue with the government. "Instead, they are engaged in openly instigating it to continue their armed struggle," the ministry said in a statement.

Moscow, which wields veto power on the U.N. Security Council, has shielded Assad's regime from international sanctions and provided it with weapons despite an international outcry.

In Paris, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault ?a leading participant in NATO's air campaign last year in Libya ? cautioned that his country opposed any military intervention in Syria without a U.N. mandate. However, he indicated that France has provided communication and protection equipment to Syrian rebels.

"We cannot abandon the Syrian people. We have sent in some non-lethal means, we are not impassive. And you see things are moving," Ayrault said on France's BFM TV.

In Brussels, the European Union's humanitarian aid commissioner urged the U.N. Security Council to unite in the face of what she said was an escalating humanitarian disaster in Syria and ensure that assistance reaches civilians affected by the civil war.

"Over the last weeks, the humanitarian condition in Syria ... is going from bad to terrible," Kristalina Georgieva said. "Today we have 2.5 million inside Syria in need of assistance, among them 1.2 million displaced population and the number of refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, is growing by the day."

NASA finds spiny dinosaur prints at its Maryland campus (+video)

Stanford has discovered the footprint of a lumbering, spiny dinosaur called a nodosaur in NASA's own backyard on the Goddard Space Flight Center campus.

At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, some of the most brilliant minds in the world work to build the spacecraft that humans use to explore their universe. But where space scientists now roam, dinosaurs used to call home, according to dino-hunter Ray Stanford.

Stanford has discovered the footprint of a lumbering, spiny?dinosaur?called a nodosaur in NASA's own backyard on the Goddard Space Flight Center campus. NASA officials aren't disclosing the precise location of the print, fearing that someone might damage or try to remove the fossilized track.

The dinner-plate-sized footprint bears the mark of four dino toes. It belongs to a nodosaur, a tank-like, armored beast studded with bony protuberances that roamed the area about 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, which lasted from about 125 million to 65 million years ago. Nodosaurs were plant-eaters, and this one appeared to be moving quickly across the Cretaceous mud, as its heel did not sink deeply into the ground. [See Images of the Ancient Dino-Print]

Stanford, an amateur paleontologist who has had several papers published, confirmed his find with Johns Hopkins University dinosaur expert David Weishampel. On Aug. 17, Stanford shared the location of the find with Goddard officials and with Washington Post reporter Brian Vastag, who made the discovery public the same day.

Stanford also found several?smaller dinosaur footprints?in the area, likely from meat-eating theropods. He called the location "poetic."

"Space scientists may walk along here, and they're walking exactly where this big, bungling heavy-armored dinosaur walked, maybe 110 to 112-million years ago," Stanford told Goddard officials.

Maryland is no spring chicken when it comes to dinosaur fossils; in fact, the corridor between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., is known as "Dinosaur Alley," because so many of the beasts' fossils were discovered during iron mining in the 18th and 19th centuries, according to Weishampel. "Today, Maryland remains the only source of Early Cretaceous dinosaur fossils on the East Coast," he wrote in a 1996 article for?Johns Hopkins University magazine.

NirCmd: Take control of Windows at the Command Line ...

August 22, 2012, 11:08 AM PDT

Takeaway: Sometimes you want to modify the Windows user interface, manipulate connected hardware, and create interesting Windows boot-time configurations.

As a systems administrator junkie myself, I really have a huge fondness for the command line. For anyone that has used a UNIX or Linux powered system, the command line is an essential conduit to working the operating system to its fullest potential. Windows also sports a command-line interface which gets the job done well enough, but sometimes you want a little bit more. For example, say you want to modify the Windows user interface, manipulate connected hardware, and create interesting Windows boot-time configurations. There?s a small tool out there that delivers surprisingly interesting results for these tasks.

Automatically sign up for TechRepublic's Windows and Office newsletter!

Command line

NirCmd by NirSoft is the ultimate command-line-based Windows task tool. According to the company website for the product, NirCmd can:

?Write and delete values and keys in the Registry, write values into an INI file, dial to your Internet account or connect to a VPN network, restart windows or shut down the computer, create shortcut to a file, change the created/modified date of a file, change your display settings, turn off your monitor, open the door of your CD-ROM drive, and more.?

It?s pretty neat that NirCmd is so versatile, and quite frankly, the available options with each task it can do are too vast to cover here. Installation is quite simple as well. Simply run the nircmd.exe file from the desktop as an administrator and then click the button ?Copy to Windows Directory?. Once this is done, you can then invoke the NirCmd utility from anywhere when you are on the command-line.

However, I?d like to give a really neat example of something I did with NirCmd. I wanted my computer to speak a greeting to me out loud every time I logged into Windows. To do this, I simply fired up Notepad and entered the line nircmd speak text ?Hello Matt! Welcome to Windows!? in the file. I then saved the file to my Documents folder as an NT CMD file (under the Save As? context menu, change the ?Save as type? to All Files (*.*) and save the file as voice.cmd).

With the new file, I created a shortcut to voice.cmd inside my Startup folder in the Start Menu and set the shortcut to run as a minimized window. That?s it! Of course, I merely scraped the tip of the iceberg with this nifty little gem of an app. All of the different commands that you can pass to NirCmd can be found in the NirCmd.chm help file provided with the exe.

Bottom line

With this tool being very small in size and available for absolutely free (as well as the other tools made by Nir Sofer), it?s definitely worth a shot and, if nothing else, will provide you with nice customizability and even entertainment. Since NirCmd comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors, be sure to download the right edition for your version of Windows for best results.

Kaspersky urges cyber security education | IT-Online

The architecture of the IT department for most companies has drastically changed over the past few years, and with the uptake of mobile devices and virtualisation security threats have altered.
IT security therefore continues to remain a key challenge and priority for IT departments and this was the topic of conversation at the IDC IT Security Roadshow being held in Johannesburg on the?14 August.
Worldwide, businesses have had to adapt to the influx of new technological trends such as cloud computing, virtualisation, and ?bring your own device? (BYOD). This has impacted on not only how IT managers approach security but also on how businesses and consumers need to understand the potential security risks associated with the increasing reliance on mobile devices and technological capabilities.
?While security experts tend to focus on future technologies for protecting potential threats, one still needs to be cognisant of incidents that have also happened in the past.
?By learning from these issues, we are able to build stronger and safer IT security communities for businesses and consumers alike,? says David Jacoby, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab and one of the presenters at the IDC IT Security Roadshow.
Although users acknowledge the existence of various online threats, they are generally still reckless when it comes to IT security.
In fact, it has been reported that approximately 16% of Microsoft-based laptop users, 50% of Macbook users, and 65% of smartphone users do not use any kind of security software on their devices. This indicates that consumers and businesses still need to be educated on the implications of not taking IT and online security seriously.
?Businesses and consumers are becoming more digitally advanced. As a security company, our responsibility should be to ensure that users are aware of the threats and dangers of the Internet and new technologies, as they continue to emerge. Educating users on such a simple thing as e-mail scams can have a ripple effect on the security landscape of a region,? adds Jacoby.
Knowledge is power and by educating people on the numerous threats and pitfalls the IT landscape has to offer, it is possible to create a society of cyber warriors to fight the fight for safe and secure Internet activity. But it is not just about educating the cyber community ? it is important to continuously update the knowledge available to them to ensure a sustainable approach to IT security.

Debunking Diets: Paleo Pros and Cons | Greatist

The amount of dietary do?s and don?ts bombarding us on a daily basis may make sifting through bogus nutritional claims seem insurmountable. But have no fear ? the Greatist sleuths are here to decode the latest, greatest, (and not so great) diets in our Debunking Diets Series. This week, we?re debunking the Paleo diet.
Debunking Diets: Putting Paleo to the Test

The Breakdown

What you can eat:
Animal proteins (quality meats ? preferably grass-fed ? eggs, and fish). Fruits. Vegetables (except for starchy varieties). Nuts and seeds. Healthy fats (olive oil, fish oil, avocado). Herbs and spices.

What you can?t eat:
Dairy. Grains. Legumes. Starches. Alcohol. Processed foods, sugars, and sugar substitutes.

Exceptions:
Paleo dieters who engage in endurance events lasting 90 minutes or more can consume sweet potatoes and yams to up glycogen stores as part of training.

The Theory:
Per Paleo thinking,?modern human digestive systems weren?t designed to handle the refined sugars, starchy carbs, grains, legumes, and dairy products that have snuck into our diets over the past 10,000 years. The consequence? A steady expansion of our waistlines and an uptick in disease rates.

Around 1975, one gastroenterologist suggested a solution: Go retro ? to an era before we learned how to farm, homogenize, can, sugar, refine, fry, re-fry, and all those other techniques that make foods convenient, tasty, and bacteria-free. Since our hunter-gatherer ancestors didn?t seem to suffer from modern dietary-induced woes, the thinking went, we too might rid ourselves of our post-agricultural era illnesses by sticking to Stone Age meal plans.

Time to Go Paleo? ??What The Science Says

It?s clear that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, omega-3, and other polyunsaturated fats improve our body?s ability to make use of food rather than store it as fat or keep it lingering in the blood stream as excess sugar[][]. The rationale behind eliminating starchy carbs is supported by studies finding that they spike blood sugar more severely than fructose (the sugar molecule found in fruits and veggies). And the low-carb profile Paleo adheres to does indeed dial down inflammation in tissues by altering the composition of the fatty acids they contain[].

Numerous studies show?diets mimicking what we think our ancestors ate can shrink waistlines and lower bad cholesterol levels[][]. Oh, and when we drop legumes and grains, dairy, and refined sugars,?blood pressure tends to follow suit[]. So let?s take a closer look at those three problem spots.

On Legumes and Whole Grains

But (and there?s a big ?but?): Lgumes and whole grains have also been shown to reduce risk of disease and improve insulin sensitivity and blood glucose levels ? not to mention decrease BMI[][][][]. So what justifies keeping them out of our bellies? Paleo proponents argue that legumes, grains, and other starches (i.e. potatoes) contain high levels of antinutrients (lectin, prolamin, phytate and saponins, for starters). These compounds, the Paleo philosophy holds, block key digestive enzymes, promote inflammation and, in some cases, lie at the root of autoimmune diseases and cancer[].

Research does show that excess consumption of some antinutrients offsets our belly?s bacteria levels and puts us at risk for inflammatory diseases like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel syndrome[][]. But there isn?t as much science to support cutting them out completely. Some studies suggest dietary lectins from legumes and grains may bolster good bacteria inside our tummies and aid digestion[].

Dairy Deficit?

As for concerns that the Paleo diet doesn?t provide enough calcium, worriers take note: Dairy isn?t the only place you?ll find this mineral. Leafy greens like kale and spinach, for instance, trump milk, cheese, and yogurt when it comes to absorption of the bone-saving stuff. One cup of milk may contain 25 percent of our recommended daily calcium, but dairy?s acidity can actually cause our bodies to leach calcium from bones as a buffer to keep blood alkaline?levels, says?Nell Stephenson, a?nutrition and fitness coach and self-professed Paleoista.??You?re better off going with the 24 percent daily value of calcium a [one cup] serving of [cooked] spinach delivers,? since the natural alkalinity of veggies won?t necessitate stealing as many antacids from your skeleton.

Carbo-Don?ts

Contrary to many misperceptions, ?Going Paleo doesn?t mean eating all meat, all the time,? Stephenson says. (Remember: fish and poultry are fair game.) ?Only eating meat puts the body in ketosis ? an unnatural reliance on fat, rather than carbohydrates, for fuel. We need carbs to function, just not in the form of bread, pasta, and bagels.? That?s why Paleo endurance athletes chow down on yams pre-race, and why Stephenson emphasizes the need to eat more vegetables and moderate amounts of fruit for adequate energy.

Should I Go Stone Age? ? Diet Decision

Increasing your intake of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and lean proteins while cutting refined sugars, processed foods, and bread can lead to some serious health benefits.

But whether you want to go the whole caveman way and cut legumes, dairy, and grains is another question. Science shows this does benefit health as long as you make up for lost calcium and carbs via the right veggies and fruits. As always, speak with a nutritionist or doctor before making any drastic dietary decisions.?

Have you gone Paleo? What?s been your experience?

Countdown to Kickoff: New coach, same resolve for 2012 Pirates

The text popped up on Nathan Bernards? phone before school on May 14. It was from Dayton football coach Gary Thorson, telling the team captain to text players and let them know that there was going to be a football meeting at lunch.

Bernards said he had no clue what it was about. Not a week before, Thorson had been talking to him about summer workouts. But at the May 14 meeting, Bernards found out with the other players in attendance that Thorson was stepping away from football to become the director of local and world mission for West Valley Community Church in Hillsboro.

?I had no clue what to think,? Bernards said. ?I thought he was going to be here for a long time.?

Thorson?s tenure at Dayton lasted two seasons. The Pirates went 22-3 and lost in the 3A state championship game in 2011 to Santiam Christian. They won two West Valley League championships and made a name for not just winning games but dominating them.

Bernards said the first text he received about Thorson?s resignation was from defensive coordinator Brodie Unger. Bernards asked him if he was taking over, and a month later, Dayton athletic director Todd Shirley confirmed that Unger was the new coach.

?Coach Unger is a football genius,? Bernards said. ?I hope he stays here for a long time. Everything he does is about football. He?s who we all wanted, and he?s who we are comfortable with.?

The transition was nearly seamless, which was Unger?s plan. The coaching staff stayed the same, and he was able to continue with spring practices and planning for the summer.

Unger, 31, graduated from Linfield and is close with Thorson, also a Linfield product. The two talk and text frequently, but since camp started this week, Unger hasn?t thought much about Thorson.

?I think as a staff we?ve been so focused on moving forward,? he said. ?Gary was a mentor to me. A lot of what I do, I got from him.

?But yeah, I?m different.?

The Pirates are different as well. Yes, all-state selections Forrest Garcia, Kevin Castillo, Nathan Bernards and Jered White return, but 13 seniors from last season have graduated. Defensive Player of the Year Hayden Craig and Offensive Player of the Year A.J. Hedgecock are now on Division I teams, causing many around the league and around the state to breathe easier.

?It?s not a secret,? Unger said, ?We graduated some key spots, and now we want to see who rises to the occasion.?

Bernards said he gets angry when people ask him how the Pirates will be this year. The past few seasons that was never a question. Everyone knew Dayton was going to be good, but with five starters returning on both offense and defense, it?s a valid question.

?I don?t care what people say ? ?(The seniors) are leaving. Dayton?s done. Dayton?s in a rebuilding year.? I don?t believe that at all,? Bernards said.

?Losing A.J. and Hayden and the rest is going to suck, but we have numerous guys that can be Players of the Year.?

Unger is of the same mind.

?We need to understand that our seniors this year were a big reason for our success last year,? he said. ?A huge reason. They?re doing a great job of picking up where we left off.?

Bernards and Garcia will be the biggest focus of opponents? game plans. Bernards? composure and knowledge of the offense at quarterback helped the Dayton juggernaut run smoothly last year when it outscored opponents 606-174.

Unger said Bernards is as dedicated as they come. Unger was at the movies one Saturday and got a text from his quarterback.

?It said, ?Hey coach, what do you think if we did this and this in this situation??? Unger said. ?Not many high schoolers are texting their coach on a Saturday night about football.

?That?s what you get with Nate. It?s been a lot of fun. He?s a great guy.?

Garcia will probably garner even more focus than Bernards does during the season. He has made a name for himself the past few years with his game-breaking speed and deceiving athleticism in the passing game.

?At the Linfield football camp, Forrest made some catches and runs, and I had a couple of friends who said we looked good,? Unger said. ?I said, ?Well, Forrest makes a lot of coaches look good.? ?

Unger said the biggest test for him is to make sure that the coaching staff doesn?t rely on Garcia too much and become one-dimensional.

?You have to pick your spots,? he said. ?He is by far one of the quickest and most explosive players I?ve ever coached.?

The Pirates do have other pieces in place to help. Unger has been telling his players that they have to play older than they are, and he said a lot are stepping up. Junior Corwin Hiatt is a tall, athletic tight end and receiver to try to fill the void left by Craig.

?Corwin is jumping in and being that bigger receiver,? Unger said. ?He can jump.?

Unger said players like White, Justin Sutton and J.J. Jones will all have to be key players this year if they have any chance of repeating. Yeah, Unger said, they lost 13 seniors, but worrying about that won?t bring them back.

?Every year, depth concerns you,? he said. ?You always wish you had more, but it?s one of those things that you can?t change, so why worry about it??

That might be Unger?s biggest talking point. Why worry about things out of your control? He talked to players during the spring after he was hired and told them he didn?t want to hear any talk about the state championship game or last season. Not because they couldn?t learn from their mistakes, but because it already happened and it wouldn?t help them win football games today.

?You can?t focus on the past,? he said. ?It?s not going to do us or the program any good. It?s wasted energy.?

Three activists get two years for anti-Putin church stunt

Click photo to enlarge

Demonstrators shout slogans in support of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot during a protest in front of the Sagrada Familia church designed by architect Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, Spain on Friday.

Saturday August 18, 2012

MOSCOW -- Three punk rock-style activists who briefly took over a cathedral in a raucous prayer for deliverance from Vladimir Putin were sentenced to two years in prison for hooliganism on Friday, a decision that drew protests around the world as it highlighted the Russian president?s intensifying crackdown on dissent.

Protesters from Moscow to New York and musicians including Madonna and Paul McCartney condemned the prosecution of the three women, members of a band called Pussy Riot. Several countries, including the U.S., and even some Kremlin loyalists decried the verdict.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, were arrested in March after performing a "punk prayer" in Christ the Savior Cathedral, dancing and high-kicking as they called on the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Putin, who was elected to a third term as Russia?s president two weeks later.

Judge Marina Syrova ruled Friday that the band members had "committed hooliganism driven by religious hatred." She rejected the women?s arguments that they were protesting the Russian Orthodox Church?s support for Putin and didn?t intend to offend religious believers.

Putin himself had said the band members shouldn?t be judged too harshly, creating expectations that they could be sentenced to time served and freed in the courtroom. This, however, would have left the impression that Putin had bowed

to public pressure, something he has resisted throughout his 12 years in power.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin couldn?t intervene in the judicial process and refused to comment on the sentence.

When the sentence was announced, shouts of "down with the police state" rose from a crowd of hundreds of Pussy Riot supporters outside the courtroom. More than 50 people were detained, including former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, who said police beat him.

Protesters donned the colorful balaclavas that have become a symbol of the band in many European and U.S. cities, though no single protest outside Moscow drew more than a few hundred people.

In Kiev, Ukraine, four women, one of whom was topless, used a chainsaw to cut down a cross. About 40 protesters gathered in New York held up banners that read: "We are all hooligans."

The crowd in Moscow included many of the prominent writers, journalists and opposition partisans who spearheaded the mass protests that shook the city over the winter and spring. Pussy Riot was an obscure band of activists for much of that time, and some fellow opponents of Putin disapproved of their tactics, but they rallied to the group?s defense after the March arrests.

For three hours as the judge read the verdict, the defendants stood in handcuffs in a glass cage in the courtroom, the same one where oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, another Putin opponent, was convicted two years ago.

The three women smiled sadly as the judge recounted testimony of prosecution witnesses accusing them of sacrilege and "devilish dances" in the church and said that their feminist views made them hate the Orthodox religion.

Tolokonnikova laughed out loud when the judge read the testimony of a psychologist who said that her "active stance on social issues" was an anomaly.

The three women remained calm and kept smiling after the judge announced the sentence. Someone in the courtroom shouted "Shame!" They waved at relatives from behind the glass.

The charges carried a maximum penalty of seven years in prison, though prosecutors had asked for a three-year sentence.

Popular Russian author Boris Akunin, a supporter of Pussy Riot who was outside the courthouse, said Putin "has doomed himself to another year and a half of international shame and humiliation."

"The whole thing is bad because it?s yet another step toward the escalation of tensions within society. And the government is absolutely to blame," he said.

Defense lawyers said they would appeal but had little hope that the verdict would be overturned. "This verdict is the result of a political decision in the Kremlin, made by Vladimir Putin," said Mark Feygin.

He said the women would not ask for a pardon from Putin. "They will not beg and humiliate themselves before such a bastard," he said.

Another sign of the defendants? resolve came in a new song the band released Friday on the Internet: "Putin Is Lighting the Fires of Revolution."

Samutsevich?s father said he had met with his daughter before the court session and she was prepared for a prison sentence. "We tried to comfort her," said Stanislav Samutsevich.

Amnesty International, which has called the women prisoners of conscience, said the court ruling "shows that the Russian authorities will stop at no end to suppress dissent and stifle civil society."

Governments including the United States, Britain, France and Germany denounced the sentences as disproportionate.

President Barack Obama was disappointed by the decision, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. "While we understand the group?s behavior was offensive to some, we have serious concerns about the way that these young women have been treated by the Russian judicial system," he said.

Further controversy was stirred up by the detention of Kasparov, now one of Putin?s fiercest critics. He said he was beaten by the police who detained him, but police claimed that he bit an officer?s finger. After his release, Kasparov tweeted that he was going to an emergency room "to check my injuries and to prove that I am not drunk and haven?t bitten anyone."

The Pussy Riot case has helped to energize the opposition. Protest leader Alexei Navalny condemned the verdict as a "cynical mockery of justice" and said the opposition would step up its protests.

Even some Kremlin loyalists strongly criticized the verdict. Former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said it has dealt "yet another blow to the court system and citizens? trust in it."

??The country?s image and its attractiveness in the eyes of investors have suffered an enormous damage," he said.

Mikhail Fedotov, the head of a presidential advisory council on human rights, voiced hope that the sentence will be repealed or at least softened. Mikhail Barshchevsky, a lawyer who represents the Cabinet in high courts, said that the verdict had no basis in Russian criminal law.

The Pussy Riot case has underlined the vast influence of the Russian Orthodox Church. Although church and state are formally separate, the church identifies itself as the heart of Russian national identity and critics say its strength effectively makes it a quasi-state entity. Some Orthodox groups and many believers had urged strong punishment for an action they consider blasphemous.

The head of the church, Patriarch Kirill, has made no secret of his strong support for Putin, praising his leadership as "God?s miracle," and he described the punk performance as part of an assault by "enemy forces" on the church. He avoided talking to journalists Friday as he left Warsaw?s Royal Castle following a ceremony in which he and the head of Poland?s Catholic Church called for mutual forgiveness and reconciliation between the churches.

The Orthodox Church said in a statement after the verdict that the band?s stunt was a "sacrilege" and a "reflection of rude animosity toward millions of people and their feelings." It also asked the authorities to "show clemency toward the convicted in the hope that they will refrain from new sacrilegious actions."

A handful of Orthodox activists joined the crowd outside the courthouse. "I?m glad they were punished like criminals and didn?t get away with it," said Dmitry Tsorionov, holding a Bible. "They committed a grave crime and nobody should do it again."

The case comes in the wake of several recently passed laws cracking down on opposition, including one that raised the fine for taking part in an unauthorized demonstrations by 150 times to 300,000 rubles (about $9,000).

Another measure requires non-governmental organizations that both engage in vaguely defined "political activity" and receive funding from abroad to register as "foreign agents." Putin has accused foreign countries of feeding much of the dissent in Russia.

ICC asked to prosecute Rwanda's Kagame

Opponents of Rwanda's long-time President Paul Kagame asked the International Criminal Court Friday to pursue him over war crimes committed in the Democratic Republic of Congo this year.

A spokeswoman for the ICC prosecutor's office confirmed it had received a request to prosecute Kagame but stressed the court handled "hundreds" of similar communications a year with equal treatment.

In June UN experts in a report accused Kagame of supporting with arms and ammunition rebels of the March 23 (M23) movement, which is fighting government troops in the DR Congo. Kigali has denied the charge.

M23 has been fighting the Congolese army since April after a mutiny was spurred by Tutsi army general Bosco Ntaganda, nicknamed "The Terminator", against whom the ICC issued a fresh arrest warrant last month.

"We are asking the prosecutor to indict Paul Kagame," said Nkiko Nsengimana, a coordinator of Rwanda's United Democratic Forces (FDU) party.

The FDU is the party of opposition leader Victoire Ingabire and is not recognised by Kigali.

Close to 100 protesters gathered outside the ICC's heavily-fortified building in The Hague where they chanted slogans such as "Kagame, assassin!" and "Kagame under arrest".

"The M23 is simply a Rwandan army," Nsengimana added, calling Kagame "its supreme leader".

Lawyer Christopher Black said the request to prosecute Kagame for war crimes committed since March was filed on behalf of the FDU and a second opposition group, the Rwandan National Congress.

Black said Kagame charges against Kagame should include M23's alleged use of child soldiers.

Meanwhile, Kinshasa this month also claimed Rwanda was backing the rebels and added it would refuse to negotiate with the M23, who are drawn from an earlier rebel movement integrated into the Congolese army in 2009. The rebels claim Kinshasa failed to honour the 2009 peace deal.

Spokeswoman for Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda's office Florence Olara acknowledged receipt of the request Friday, saying "we will analyse the information received as we do with all... communications to the Prosecutor."

But she added: "We receive hundreds of such communications every year from all types of sources relating to the situations we investigate as well as others and we treat all of them equally."

The ICC is the world's first permanent tribunal, set up in 2002 to deal with the most serious crimes of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

It has issued several arrest warrants relating to the conflict in the eastern DR Congo, including against militia leader Thomas Lubanga, who was sentenced to 14 years in jail on July 10 for using child soldiers in his rebel army. Ntaganda however, remained at large.

Police comb theaters after threat to Carmike chain

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) ? Movie theaters in several states were combed for explosives Friday after someone phoned in a bomb threat to the corporate headquarters of Carmike Cinemas, a spokesman for the chain said.

Carmike officials alerted the FBI after discovering the threat in a voicemail message Friday morning, said company spokesman Terrell Mayton. He said the call was placed after hours Thursday by someone claiming to work for a contractor that provides janitorial services to Carmike.

While Mayton wouldn't discuss specifics of the call, Columbus police said the person referenced the Sylvester Stallone movie, "The Expendables 2," that opened Friday.

"It sounded like a disgruntled worker," Columbus police Lt. Bill Rawn told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (http://bit.ly/Nt9lZD). He said the caller said: "'You don't pay us enough. You cut back our hours. We're not expendable. We'll show you we're not expendable.'"

Mayton said the caller outlined "some specifics to a bomb threat at certain locations," but that he did not know how many theaters were mentioned or in how many states.

Carmike owns 233 theaters in 35 states. Media outlets Friday reported police searching theaters in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and North Carolina.

No bombs were found. Most theaters were cleared to open before their first show times Friday, Mayton said.

A spokesman for the FBI in Atlanta said the agency is investigating.

Since a July shooting at a movie theater in Colorado killed 12 and injured 58, theaters nationwide have been on alert. Several people since have been arrested for disrupting movies and bringing firearms to theaters.

Gunmen attack Ivory Coast jail, free prisoners

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) ? An Ivory Coast official says gunmen have freed 100 inmates from a prison in the latest attack on the country's military.

Kouassi Kakao, a spokesman for the military chief of staff, said all 150 inmates had been temporarily freed from the prison in the town of Dabou, but that 50 have since been recaptured.

Officials said the attack began at 11 p.m. Wednesday night with the storming of a military checkpoint in Dabou, and that sporadic gunfire could still be heard Thursday morning.

The attack was the sixth targeting Ivory Coast's military in less than two weeks. At least 11 soldiers have been killed in the violence.

Ivory Coast officials have blamed the attacks on rogue soldiers and loyalists of former President Laurent Gbagbo.
